lol Consensus? Not much consensus between Catholics and protestants, man, and this is a good example.
The Church teaches that the souls of the dead are in the afterlife, heaven or hell or purgatory, looking down on us, as you said. Then, on the last day, they will get their "glorified bodies," like the body Jesus had after His resurrection. Fellow Catholics, please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Lots of our protestant brothers here on R&S are pretty adamant about the other: that they're just sort of in an unconscious hold pattern till then.
I'm Catholic, so guess which one I believe. I once felt my grandmother's presence, out of the blue, just before I almost got slammed by a car on a freeway. She died in 1983. So I'm pretty sure her spirit is around. But for me, it's one of those points that are fun to think about, but ultimate aren't worth fighting about.

i guess we will not know for sure until it happens to us......
the sleeping thing started in the OT when people had no clue what happened next...
Jesus told a story of a rich man who saw his poor colleague in the bosom of Abraham after death....there were conversations that went on about this.......so it did not sound like any one was sleeping then..

When a man dies, his soul dies with him/her, the spirit of life returns to God who gave it. Soul and spirit are different. When Christ died, he gave up his spirit to God.
So, the dead are sleeping now until judgement day. Otherwise, there would be no judgement day if everyday all deaths face judgment in heaven.
