It means they do not want to submit to any authority outside of themselves.
Personal autonomy, basically.
By saying "I'm a spiritual person" you are basically giving yourself license to do whatever you want without any consequences (so you think) and to believe whatever you wish without any authority....while still telling yourself and others you are a decent and moral person because you are "spiritual."
But the fact is, without the Church we are like lost sheep. Why else would Jesus have established a Church if He didn't think we needed the moral guidance and brotherhood?

What is spiritual? In the dictionary one can find that pertaining to sacred things or matters; religious; devotional; sacred or pertaining to the spirit as the seat of the moral or religious nature or relating to the mind or intellect or affairs of the church. Therefore being spiritual is of a religion group. In order to be spiritual you belong to group of religious beliefs. Don’t fool yourselves. There is no such thing as none denominational church. They are organized as any other church. If so then you rely own strengths, intellect, and will. So answer this by your self of many bibles which is the right one? So of the many faiths which one is the right one? What ideas of meaning of love is the right one? If you ask an answer to some one then you are fallowing that man's book and beliefs. Let me tell a simple answer God came to the world so that you would know him and left Apostles (a Church) that God preserved throught time so that may have eternal life and be saved.

The presumption behind a statement like that is religion is supposed to be useful to mankind, and so many abandon "organized religion" in favor of spirituality, claiming that religion is not useful or necessary. They basically believe secular means can accomplish the same ends so who needs the Church?
But this is a misunderstanding of religion. It's not utilitarian.
The purpose of the Church is to reveal the truth behind reality to the world.
The Church doesn't always make life "better." In fact, sometimes it requires a lot of suffering and persecution. But what it DOES ---what it is supposed to do--- is reveal to us the truth about God and ourselves.
In that regard, organized religion is always necessary and no one can be a truly "spiritual" person without God's grace.

Code words for, "I want to believe. But, there is just so much evidence saying not to. So, I'm going to remain a fence sitter till someone pushes me one way or the other. And so not to look the fool, I wont be outwardly religious as not to embarrass myself or my non-believing friends." It is a first baby step to become an atheist.

what i mean by being "spiritual" is that i do believe in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ, and try my best to follow the rules; i tithe by giving to those who are less fortunate then myself and giving my time all in the name of the Lord. i do not look for or expect thanks, i am thankful.
i am not "religious" as i do not believe in organized religion; do not need to go to a physical building to pray and worship God; do not believe that someone is going to burn in hell if they don't believe in the same faith; etc.
many blessings. :-)

spiritual is not limited to doctrine..rules, regulations, rituals, tenets, by laws etc. of a religion...there is more freedom and ways to express love for ones follow humankind when one is a spiritual person. Spiritual frees one up to discover more about self, others, nature, music along with the great universe...i hope this helps somewhat...really.

Normally they mean that they don't belong to an organised religion but nevertheless believe in something unverifiable.
But it'd be nice if they could just say that rather than making up their own definitions and expecting everyone else to understand them.
