I know that it is due to the mbr (main boot record) please find me some free software to fix that because i cannot boot of of a cd rom at all i can boot from floppy i have been searching on google and havnt found anything your help is appreciated

p.s how do you give 10 points to someone?

I assume you're using Windows.

If you're able to boot from a floppy disk, do that.

Then, once you get a command prompt, type

fdisk /mbr

When the computer is first booting, follow the instruction for entering the BIOS. In the BIOS, set the boot sequence so that the CD drive boot before the hard drive. Now try the following:

USING THE WINDOWS REPAIR CONSOLE

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.
