The easiest and most efficient way is to divide your boot hard drive into two partitions. There's no need to have a separate hard drive for each OS, since you'll ony use one at a time anyway. Install Windows XP on the first partition. Once that's complete, put in your Vista CD, reboot, and install Vista on the second partition. Vista will install a boot menu that allows you to select which OS you want to start.

By default, Vista will boot automatically if you don't make a selection. If you want to change that, there's a very good free application called VistaBootPRO that allows you to customize your boot options.

It doesn't matter which OS you install first, but you will need to create a partition for each operating system. This can be done while installing Windows. During the installation you will see instruction for removing and creating partitions. Follow these instructions, but only create a partition that is about half the size of the available space. When you have done that, Windows will want to format the partition, allow this to happen. Now continue with the installation.

When you install the second OS, use the unpartitioned space for this installation. Again, Windows will want to format, etc.

windows doesn't like sharing a drive so i suggest two different drives and install vista on one and xp on the other one, doesn't matter which one first, at startup u might need to alter the boot sequence
