Well... it's definitely in the eye of the beholder. My explanation would be an example: women and hijab. Many women view it as oppression, yet their are also women in western societies, where it is not mandatory, who will argue their right to wear it. Self-oppression? I think so, sometimes. But, it is in the eye of the beholder.

I can't imagine a woman wanting to wear that stuff...

Christian oppression is an illusion. Christians bake cookies and go to Bible studies and pray. Their biggest fault is that they have no life.

Muslim oppression varies from country to country.

I don't know what you mean by "eye of the beholder", usually when someone is trying to control you or beat the heck out of you there's no gray area.

(Is hijab anything like forcing yourself to wear high heels?)

(oh..the unlearned..how they interpret things..especially when their little hearts can't handle the "triffles" of life..) Maybe we should go around and "handle them with "kid gloves" and carry kleenex in our pockets...Or! (just an idea..) they could actually read their Bibles, and "learn" what it is they are to expect, and what to do about it in advance..and how to handle these things, and not go around moping about the little things? "Peace!"
