It used to part of India, then during partition it was known as East Pakistan. It is a poorer country, but nonetheless significant.

Food wise, the food is similar to Indian/Pakistani food with a strong emphasis on seafood.
The cuisine of Bangladesh has considerable regional variations.
A staple across the country however is rice and various kinds of lentil, which is locally known as dal (sometimes written as daal). As a large percentage of the land (over 80% on some occasions) can be under water, either intentionally because of farming practices or due to severe climatological, topographical or geographical conditions, not surprisingly fish features as the major source of protein in the Bangladeshi diet. There is also a saying which goes, "Mach-e-Bhat-e-Bangali" (Fish and rice make a Bengali).

It's small impovershided but kicked the heck out of Pakistan when it tried to invade it and take it over. My former Bengali roomate was a clean freak, always yelling about something,
real thrifty with money borderline cheap. The people are all unique the government is now under military control and that's a good thing because the politicians were so corrupt. The food is spicy curry Indian style with a mix of a small minority of Hindus and the main staple is rice and curry dishes. The capital of Dhaka is surrounded by beautiful water
and loads of fisherman. They have had or still do a female Prime Minister I don't recall her name. The majority of the country is Hanafi Muslim and still ride in rickshaws. They are often hit with huge storms like the recent devestating Cyclone.
I think the population is less than 5 Billion that's a guess. People there are very family orientated and not too happy with people that behave badly in public or against custom. I think and hope it succeeds with it's government issues and social problems. For a third world country they have one of the best banking systems and if given enough time will emerge out of poverty. I think the man who had something to do with banking system was a Bangladeshi who won a Nobel Peace Prize. I have a big place in my heart for it. Even my former roomate who is now an American Citizen. I saw almost all the money they made go back to the family. Truly noble and if we had family values like that here this country it would be a better place. I never seen a Bangladeshi student come here to the states and not excel in school and model behavior. I never seen a Bangladeshi here not turn meager wages into a business and work incredibly tirelessly to achieve their financial goals. I also couldn't live without my
doctor her name is Shamsad Begum and she proudly wears her hijab to work everyday. I like the rice pudding and lamb kebab. I wouldn't mind to visit in fact I think I would quite like it. I would especially enjoy watching a wedding. I was invited to one here and it was the most beautiful wedding I have ever seen. I also wouldn't mind seeing a good cricket match either! I would also like to hear the tales of the "freedom fighters" and how they won against Nixon support combined with Pakistans army that is one tough little country!

I think Bangladesh had been as good as its neighboring countries like India and Burma in terms of human resources. However, people of this country were deprived of proper education and minimum basic amenities of life as there were lack of efficient and honest leadership right from its inception first in 1947 when India got partitioned and the people of this land voted to be part of a confederation consisting of the then West Pakistan and East Bengal (as the name was till 1956).
The Bangladesh that we saw after the liberation in 1971 was also very promising leadership ruined this country to a basket case of the world. We are lucky that we got surprise changes on 11th January 2007 whereby we are seeing our kind of Lee Kwan Yeo (Singapore), or Kemal Ataturk (Turkey) or Dr. Mahathir Muhammad (Malaysia) in Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed and his team of 10 Advisors.
Therefore, I wish to think of Bangladesh coming out of long depression created by the dirty politicians during their last 15 years rule since 1991.
Other details of Bangladesh:
Area of Bangladesh: Total 144,000 km² or 55,599 sq mile.
Bangladesh is among the most densely populated countries in the world. The population is generally poor, rural and Muslim. Geographically the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual monsoon floods and cyclones.
Population: 2007 estimate 150,448,340
Density 1045/km² or 2,706/sq mile
It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Myanmar to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south

It has been invaded and exploited by Pakistan and India all wanting possesion of this treasure of potential for natural gas and oil wealth. For hundreds of years invaders and overlords have established their aristocracy in Bangladesh with the country's domestic product benefitting the country that overtook them enslaving the people of Bangladesh for profit. The people fight back always for democracy to run their own country, they are multi lingual and multi ethnical people overcoming even in the midst of all the corruption in government the country is slowly gaining good economic ground; though the masses are still terribly poverty stricken. They are a tempest in a teapot so to speak.
