Jp-8 is diesel/kerosene blend. Plain diesel is called DF-2. There are a few reasons for using JP-8. It doesn't jell as fast in cold tempuratures, is not as flammable as some other fuels and it simplifies the logistics chain.

JP8 is actually a kind of jet fuel. Its kerosine based, and used in vehicles like: jets of course, tanks, and other military vehicles. They do this because its easier to carry one type of fuel around the world instead of having gas for your trucks, diesel for your tanks, and jet fuel for your jets.

JP8 is military speak for plain ol diesel. All military ground vehicles run off of deisel due to it being more stable and less prone to igniting than gasoline.
