There are several things you can do:
First, as stated before a large mirror will help.
Second, also stated before furniture size and position.
Third, wall colors easiest way is to paint the walls a light color, this will help reflect light and make the room look brighter at the very least, the other step you can take is to shade your walls, a single flat color wont make the room look bigger but by having choosing two shades of one color and placing the darker shades in the corner and blending them out to the middle with the brighter shade it'll help a lot, but this can be difficult to do.
Forth, Cover up the corners, place plants directional lights and other none square objects in the corners, if your eye's don't see them, they're not there.
Fifth, place track lights along the ceiling walls to light the inner portion of the room more than the walls.
Changing the room's appearance to increase the size is just all physiological, the only real way to fix it is to go and knock out walls, which I don't think you want to do.

For a brighter room, use mirrors.
Mirrors reflect of light, brightening the room. Strategically placed mirrors really helps. Put mirrors on the wall opposite of a window.
To create the illusion of a bigger space, paint a 6 inch white strip on the top of the wall, around the perimeter of the room. This makes it look like the ceiling is coming down, enlarging the room.
Use light colors when painting! Bright and light yellow really makes the room cheerful!
Use sheer curtains. They make the room look bigger, brighter, and airier.

One of the simplest things to do is placing a very large mirror on the wall. We have one that is 4 X 8 feet in size. This reflects light and really make the room seem bigger.

First buy furniture in a classic design or fabric - large enough for comfortable seating, such as two loveseats with chairs, or sofa/loveseat with chairs.
Then paint the walls a light color - ivory, rose, peach, banana, sage, sky blue, aqua, periwinkle, lavender, light caramel.
Drapes should match the furniture, the walls, or both.
Throw pillows should match a color in upholstery, walls, drapes.
Place a mirror across from the windows to reflect light.
Use side tables, coffee tables with storage, to keep room uncluttered. Buy with clean lines.
Add small accessories - lamps/shades, vases, ornaments, flowerpots, candles/holders in the room colors you already have.
Frame all artwork in similar color and material - brass or chrome, oak or walnut, colored enamel.
Add some plants.
Be sure each area of room is well lit - with lamps, track lighting.
Built in cabinets/shelving are also great.
etc.

Here are a few of my own personal tips:
Pain color counts. Cream colors and blues make a tiny room really open up. Bright colors make the space feel more open. Also you can paint your walls a light color and use a darker shade for the crown molding and trim.
Use multi purpose and functioning furniture.
Let alot of light into the room. Make full use of natural lighting.
Keep the room tidy and organized. Keep it free of clutter.
Use a focal point to place mirrors. They make a room appear larger.

The best way to make your living room look bigger is by adding funiture, paintings, some decorative accessories, bright colors, and a flat screen tv.
Funiture makes all the difference. Nice, long funiture make a room look 10 times bigger then it really is! My mom has a friend whose dinning room is alot smaller then hers, but it looks bigger because her china closet is taller and her table is square and longer. Although its a tight squeeze to get into it makes her dinning room look huge.
