To whom would you have greater respect?

Who would you avoid in a dark alley?

(And how does their training differ?)

The MA who is a security professional or law enforcement agent will take you out according to the law. This could be good or bad, depending on witnesses, etc. If you are a screw-up, you will get hurt, and then go to jail.

A pro fighter might hit you too hard and kill you... OOPS!, and may or may not wind up in jail.

Look no further than Steve Jennum, still an active policeman, who won UFC 3. He practiced ninjitsu, and you probably wouldn't want a ninja starting back at you in a dark alley. The training differs only in that the police departments usually give money towards a gym, or have an excersise room on the premises.

Recently while Steve was off-duty, three people tried to rob him, and he was able to fend off three attackers.

I would have greater respect for the pro fighter because a pro fighter loves to fight and that's what differences him from others.
As for the ''dark alley thingy'' well the pro fighter won't fight you if you're not good (or willing to fight) because his purpose is to have a fight worth his time. As for the law enforcer, he will not harm you because his job is to do the exact opposite. As for the training, people use different techniques of training (calisthenics, weight training, cardio, a specific program etc...) Contrary to popular belief, the ''politically correct way of training'' is not to be taken too seriously. Bruce Lee used to train all the time and just look at his physique or even his feats. These days our pussi society tells us not to overtrain and to know your limits etc... So it depends on people's training tactics, they're mentality and so on. I'm pretty sure law enforcement HAS to follow a specific workout regime which is an option I would not consider.
