Ok, I presume the L9 means Lap 9... LR is the position. Set 4 is obvious... But what about the 1493. I read that they put the track temperature on it... Could it be 149.3 degrees? I have a tire and am trying to identify it. I know its a test tire run in June 1999 at Richmond by Rusty Wallace. The D5962 series was tested here prior to the September Winston Cup race by Rusty Wallace. That much I know. I understand all the markings on the tire except for the 1493.

Oops... I should have mentioned these number are written on the tire with a tire marker. Not stamped or otherwise embossed...

L9 is probably more like Laps-9...meaning 9 laps on that tire.

AS far as the 1493, check the serial number on the sidewall. That is probably part of that serial number, either which operator made that tire, or what time or day it was made. The teams use the serial numbers to get tires to "match-up," meaning they get tires that have serial numbers that are closest.

LR= Left Rear tire
set 4= 4th set of tires used
1493= not sure but might be tire pressure or car number

the 1493 is just the # that the tire co. gives each tire for ex a RF might be a 1201 a LF may be a 1453 so on and so on

I dont know about the L9 it may be a messed up LR
or it may be a Left side set 9 b/c it doesnt matter what tire is in front or back unlike on the right side

It really depends on the team......9 laps, Left Rear, Set #, Batch #. If it was my team, if it was tire temp, then we would mark it as such.
