I bought my boyfriend of 3 1/2 years a brand new fender acoustic guitar because his other was quite old. I noticed when I got it home that the second thickest string (not sure what it is called) isn't coiled as tightly to the top as the others. It looks as though it is coming loose... Does that matter? If so, would be be able to tighten it, or should I buy him a new strng for it, too?

Thanks alot! =] I really want him to be able to play it on Christmas Eve when I give it to him.

Where did you buy it? You should take it to a music store and ask them to set it up for you. If you bought the guitar there, they will not charge you for it, but if you didnt there will be a nominal fee. But, if there isnt time, just leave it alone and let your boyfriend do it when he gets it on christmas- dont mess with it yourself. It might just need to be tuned. Have a merry christmas!

There is a hole in the tuning peg you turn to tune the string with. The sting you are talking about is either the d or a string. As long as it does not slip and is in tune should be no problem. If it wrapped around the peg at least twice it should be fine.A set of good strings costs around 5 to 6 dollars. So why not get and extra set to go with it.It is easy to break a string while tuning it.If one breaks on Christmas day no place will be open to a new one.So get a new set of strings.Good luck and Merry Christmas to you

first of all, always buy new strings when you buy a guitar because they put on low grade strings and so many people go and play the guitars.ther is really nothing you can do but buy new strings and lucky for you they're only $4-$12.

p.s.the second thickest string is A

It is an "A" and it should have a good faith warenty from the store you bought it from to get it replaces for free otherwise around here if you do individual strings the range from 1.05-2.20 per string indevidual with a 2.00/ string or 6.00/ set labor cost!

Well I dont know much but I'll try and help you out

I think the thickest string is the top string.
You can tighten it by turning the peg thing.
