Well, I'm more of an agnostic, but I think that religion has become so corrupt that I prefer to go my own way. I'm more spiritual than anything..

I'm an atheist because religion just doesn't make sense and it stifles creative thought. Anything that can't be explained by the church is just truncated to "Well God did it." I find this to be intellectual suicide, and I believe that there is a scientific reason for the existence of the universe.
Naturally some creationist will then point out that at some point the universe will have had to have been created, and that someone must have been a creator, and to that I say, well who created the creator?

Here's a news flash: nothing leads one to atheism.
That's the way people are born.
Something, however, leads them to theism. That said, the only reason anyone believes in dieties is their environment. Someone (or more likely, a group of someones) leads an atheist to becoming a theist.
No one takes on belief in a god without persistant coaxing from mentors.

What lead me to atheism? The overwhelming evidence for alternate theories that exclude God, and the fact that there is virtually no hard evidence for a diving creator, much less the Christian God.

One atheist today wrote that his idea of hell was submission to the will of another.
I thought this a fascinating glimpse into his soul.
