What is an alternative to cheesecloth?

I am making something, and it says to use cheesecloth to seperate the liquid from the bulk, is there an alternative to a cheesecloth that I could use? Would a t-shirt work? Or a coffee filter or something like that?

A strainer could work or loosly woven gauze, you could even line the strainer with papertowel. Depends on the size you need to filter out of the liquid.
