Worse than that. Because religious people try to destroy those who think different, in order to impose what their religion says is right...
That is to say they are not only deluded, as someone else said, but also try to impose their own delusion on other people... and mankind...

We can "say" anything we want...that is as long as our physiological systems that propel speech are in good operating order.
However, a more intriguing question to ask yourself could be, do you have faith in religion...why or why not? My personal answer is that I don't put my faith in "religion" because it is nothing more than traditions of men and men cannot always be trusted. However, God is not religion and is real because of the change only He has been able to accomplish in my life when all else failed.
No one can explain that just like no one can explain wind and where it comes from or where it goes. We just know it is there...and very real, no illusion there.
I am privileged to be in a good marriage and thus I liken God as my lover much like my spouse is my lover. Can we say that "marriage" is a mental illusion? Yes. Especially if you are married to the wrong person and become "disillusioned". Can we say that the person who you are in a relationship with in the marriage is a mental illusion? No. Quite real and quite enjoyable, when it is the right one.
The same with God and religion. Being in the wrong religion is a mental illusion because the wrong god (or a distortion of the right God) and thus the wrong set of moral codes is being purported and when you wake up and realize that, you become "disillusioned". However, like the song says, "ain't nothin' like the real thing baby" and when you find it, may you have the love story of your life --with God not religion. Hint, check out Doug Batchelor who's mom was a hollywood film critic and dad was a millionaire and hear his interesting comments on themes such as this: www.dougbatchelor.com

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is a part of the United States Bill of Rights. It prohibits the federal legislature from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion" (the "Establishment Clause") or that prohibit free exercise of religion (the "Free Exercise Clause"), laws that infringe the freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to assemble peaceably, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Although the First Amendment explicitly prohibits only the named rights from being abridged by laws made by Congress, the courts have interpreted it as applying more broadly. As the first sentence in the body of the Constitution reserves all law-making ("legislative") authority to Congress, the courts have held that the First Amendment's terms also extend to the executive and judicial branches. Additionally, in the 20th century the Supreme Court has held that the Due Process clause of the 1868 Fourteenth Amendment "incorporates" the limitations of the First Amendment to restrict also the states.

I actually think the whole world is a shared illusion. Check out the book:
"A Course in Miracles"
It says that we "invented" the world we see, and its all an illusion.

No. The "mental" part of you is just part of who you are. You are physical, mental and spiritual. Your physical being is quite obvious. Your mental part is what allows you to be here "talking " to everyone. The spiritual part of you is WAY beyond the other two and what makes it so very difficult to grasp. Few find it (narrow gate) and the proof is what I read here.

Maybe your mental illusion is your religion.
Saying something or even believing it does not make it true.
I can say that Washington D.C. does not exist because I've never cared to go find it for myself.

No baby. The most sensible, intelligent and successful people in the world believe in God and religion. If there is God and you dont live according to God's wish you end up in hell. Why take the risk of falling in hell of fire FOREVER?. Good management avoids fata risks like that. So believe in Jesus Christ and do not commit sins against the 10 ten commandments. All sex outside marriage is mortal sin.

Religion is actually a structured discipline akin to a methodology. It's a documented approach. That means it's not an illusion.
I think you mean delusion? You can have spiritual delusions, sure.
