My left eye is swollen and has been since yesterday, and I have a cough. My eye just slightly hurts when I blink it. If I went Christmas shopping today (I've planned on it since the beginning of this week), would that not be a good idea? Should I go see a doctor now? I have had a swollen eye recently too. But I always seem to wake up with a swollen eye when I've been crying a few hours before I go to bed the night before. Could this be the cause?

You could have a sinus infection or an eye infection caused by a cold virus. Symptoms of meningitis are stiff neck, high fever, cannot tolerate light, extreme fatigue. Meningitis would most likely cause you to be admitted into a hospital. Your symptoms sound like a sinus infection, (sinusitis). You need to see your doctor. If it is a sinus infection, most likely you will be given antiobiotics, maybe some antihistamines, and feel better in a few days.

There are only about 10,000 possible causes. Meningitis (bacterial) is a severe condition accompanied with symtoms such as :
fever
headache
neck stiffness and pain
flu-like symptoms
It is not likely, given your symptoms that you are afflicted with this. Not meaning to trivialize your condition, but there are some 100 forms of rhino virus which could present some of the symptoms you report. Check your own temperature with a thermometer. Get a simple blood test. This latter test will easily determine if you have:
>a bacterial infection
>a viral infestation
>bio-chemical anomalies

When you cry, your eyes swell up and if you go to sleep right after, they will be puffy in the morning. Meningitis would leave you with a high fever and stiff neck, as well as other aches and pains. You most likely have something irritating your eye (such as crying or rubbing it too much). I think you should get some good eye drops and try not to rub it. You should be fine! :)

Meningitis is an infection of the brain's covering. This sheath extends down the spinal cord so a good test is to stand up straight and try to stare at your toes.
If you feel severe pain in the back of your neck extending down your back then you probably have meningitis.
As always, if you have concerns you should see a doctor.

A prime symptom of meningitis is severe neck stiffness.
Address the problem of crying so much.
I'm not uncaring, just direct. Take care.

I don't know why you'd think this is meningitis. But no, it has other symptoms. If you have a cough, make sure you wash your hands and cover your cough with a kleenex so you won't make others sick.

It is always possible. There are too many possibilities to be able to answer this online.
Please do NOT take any medical advice from people here as the final answer. Always go see a doctor if you feel worried that something is not right.

If you had meningitis you'd be in the hospital with a spiked fever and in ICU.
