It is unknown exactly when or why December 25 became associated with Christ's birth. The New Testament does not give a specific date. Sextus Julius Africanus popularized the idea that Christ was born on December 25 in his Chronographiai, a reference book for Christians written in AD 221.This date is nine months after the traditional date of the Incarnation (March 25), now celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation. March 25 was considered to be the date of the vernal equinox and therefore the creation of Adam; early Christians believed this was also the date Christ was crucified. The Christian idea that Christ was conceived on the same date that he died on the cross is consistent with a Jewish belief that a prophet lived an integral number of years. Thus, the date as a birthdate for Christ is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth.

Hi there !! Christmas on December the twenty fifth, why not in the Bible?
The actual birth date of Jesus Christ is uncertain. The date is widely agreed apon and accepted as the twenty fifth of December. Why is the date in question? Because at the time of 46BC Julius Caeser gave his world, his calendar which had a life until 1582. It was then that Pope Gregory the third 'fine tuned' it to adjust for leap year, making February 29, an added day every four years. Of course, not only did the good Pope re-invent Caeser's calendar, but he threw Christmas Day a bit off kilter. So now since 1582 we celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25. Although some religions cling to December 24. There are some Christain sects Eastern Orthodox, Armenian and others, that celebrate in the new year, a week or two later. As you can see now that the Bible was around for quite some time for the entire Christmas story to be inked in its pages.
The word, Christes Maesse, is a phrase first recorded in 1038 AD.
X. In early Greek versions the letter (chi) is the first letter of Christ.
X. Since the 16th. century or the similar letter was used for an abbreviation for Christ in Christmas. X-MAS is not rare to see in Dec.
You may want to know that the promince of Christmas Day greatly increased when Charlemanagne was crowned Emperor on Christmas Day in 800 AD.
In the Middle Ages the 12 days of Christmas Dec to Jan 6, were publically celebrated with the display of holly and other evergreens as well as gift giving. Modern culture contains the carry over with the inclusion of Christmas Cards and other holliday commitments. Oh yes, just another snippet, Noel, which is also Christmas, is givin to us by Anglo-Saxon Britains in the 7th. century. At that time the word was geol. Now it is spoken as, Yule.
So have a very Merry Christmas. Especially if you are watching the geol log burning in the fire place on the TV. Best to you in this happy season. John

There are several references to "Christmas" in the bible. The date is kind of vague. If you read the story of the Birth of Christ and look at the location of his birth, there are still a lot of questions. Jehova's Witnesses do not believe in Christmas for several reasons. I am not a JW but I have relatives on my husband's side that are so I know this from what they have told me. Christ was born in Bethlehem and during the December time frame-it isn't really cold therein december. A lot of the story is the same with them as to us-but they do not celebrate it. Birthdays are not celebrated because of an incident where someone was asked what they wanted for a present and they said John the Baptists head on a plate and that is EXACTLY what they got. I think that the date was placed by historians and theologians and it sounded correct based on the information at hand. I fully believe in Christmas as December 25th. I dont think it was called CHRISTMAS until much later. I hope that helped.

Yes, Dec. 25 is an invented date. It was created as the symbollic birth of Christ. Noone knows the actual date, as it was never mentioned in the bible. The date of December 25 was chosen a long tim e ago to replace a local pagan holiday , possibly Solstice. This was often done back then. For instance - Easter was called that because of Eoster, the goddess of spring.

St. Patrick, in his attempts to convert the pagan Irish, he tempted them with the idea that they could still party on if they converted to Christianity. So, it's like he said, "hey, you can still celebrate, you can even keep the same date, hey, by the way, did you know it's the same day as jesu's birthday? yeah, that's the ticket, it was the same day, so there you go."
On Winter Solstice, the men would travel far to the south to purchase colorful fabrics, nuts, and sweet meats from the merchants in Italy. While he was gone the woman brought in the evergreen tree, and the children decorated it, as it was a way to remind the family of the promise of the coming spring. She put a Yule log on the fire to ensure fertility. When the man came home he brought gifts for the children. The woman made fruit cake and mince meat pies with the goods he bought.
In Spring, the pagans celebrated the ressurection of Spring and St. Patrick encouraged them to celebrate the resurrection of Christ instead, but also let them keep the same date. It was the pagans who used the symbol of the rabbit and the egg which are symbols of fertility.

It's an old Pagan Holiday taken from the Roman winter solstice ceremony, which involved decorating a tree.
When Christianity was obviously going to become a problem in Rome, an Emperor decided to make December 25th a celebration of Christ's birth as it would be more easier to accept by the people, who were already celebrating this day.
So this Christmas enjoy your Pagan celebration of the coming of winter.

A lot of people attribute the date to paganism, which it has very little to do with.
For thousands of years the world was based on feudal governments with agricultural economies. These agricultural economies depended on serfs or slaves to plant and harvest crops. The crops were stored and then the feudal lords would have several winter celebrations where the serfs or slaves were fed so they didn't die during the winter.
The dates of these celebrations are all based on economics, not religion.
If the dates were based on paganism we would probably celebrate Christmas on the during the Western European Summer Solstice. It would be a lot easier to travel, exchange gifts and feast during the summer.
We celebrate Christmas in the winter because Feudal lords would feed people and give them presents to keep them alive during the winter.
PS: Drew has it right. Some Rich Idiot caused it by giving people presents and feeding them at that time.

Yes when Constantine was a Roman Emperor, there was a pagan holiday called winter solstice where they worshipped false gods and idols, constantine who was now an emerging leader of Christanity incorporated Christ into the Holiday, by presenting the Nativity, although Christ many believe was not even actually born until Spring,
The reason for this is, It states in the Bible that Shephards were watching their flock, and shephards did not keep watch over the flock in the winter time.
I want to add, there are alot of different guesses as to Christs true birth date, but one thing is for sure, Christ went to the cross for our sins, and is our savior, and through Jesus we can be saved of our sins, and I believe that is the main point we should be understanding.

I asked this same question earlier.. We all no that Jesus wasn't born on this day... he could have been but it isn't found in the bible. I went to a christmas program and it was so pretty. They had pretty songs sang just so pretty. They keep talking about light your world. I have alwayed wondered why we had christmas lights arround Christmas. Jesus lights our world. He we follow him he will light our world. If you remember when Jesus was born the wise men gave Jesus all kinds of gifts too. To me Christmas is something very special it doesn't matter what day it is it REMINDS EVERYONE about Jesus not just christians. If you are a christan you think about Jesus all the time. But alot of lost people don't. It is a time of giving.
