generally speaking, it is command discretion as to how long they can take at a time. Most limit it to two weeks. If he is in any type of school, classes will most likely start back up again on 4 January. they may or may not have to be back before then.

Service member acrue 30 days paid leave each year, (2.5 days each month) They are only allowed to build up 60 days before they must use it or sell the days back.
Soldiers in basic training at Christmas are traditionally allowed to take advances on their leave of up to two weeks, but it depends on how well their training is going. This usually takes away from their post-Basic leave time, most basic trainees get two weeks leave after Basic and before their first duty posting.

It depends on their current job or duty and their current assignment. For example, if they are in a non-combat zone with no personnel shortages they can get up to 30 days (if they have that much leave earned). If they are in a combat theatre with on-going operations the commanders may only approve a week or to if any at all. It all depends on their current MISSION and how much earned leave they have; a soldier in the Army, with good performance and behavior earns 2.5 days of leave each month and may take up to 30 days per year.

N. Cognito is correct, 30 days a year.
However, you can also get "passes", normally for 3 days. This does not count towards the 30 days.
The pass is for 3 days, but 2 of those days are usually Saturday & Sunday, so in effect, you get 1 extra work day off.

It depends on how much leave he has left for the fiscal year. Each member of the military qualifies for 30 personnel days of leave each year. If your friend has taken no leave this year, the chances are good that he doesn't need to report back for thirty days.

They earn 30 days a year. They can take more if they wish but they have to pay it back. As for if they can take it will depend on the military's need for them at the time.
