Not Hanukkah candles but Rosh haShana candles, my grandmother, 1946.
She lit them upstairs, then the family went off to the dining room to have a big family holiday meal. The baby (me) was put in a crib to go to sleep. Only my screaming alerted the rest of the family to the fact that the candles had started a smoldering fire in the paint on the wall. The fire was put out before the room burst into flames.
I never leave my blessed-candles unattended.

Not myself, but it's not such a silly question. We have a neighbour up the street that did something like that. The house didn't burn down. Bobeh was babysitting and lit the candles with her granddaughter. Bobeh put the menorah up on a high window where there were short curtains. You guessed it, they caught on fire. Burned one wall of the house.
It was really sad.

Im not jewish so I dont celebrate Hannakuh. I have never even seen a lit candle at anyones house but im sure it has happened before. That would really suck though. One big giant candle burning at Hannakuah (that would be your house)
