It's most unclear, if this has ever been a fact. I believe it has been an illusion of writers and philosophers all the time. The written word does only reach a small number of people, the spoken word can reach everyone. The careers of the evil dictators in the past century are proving it. Everybody listened to their speeches, but what if enough poeple would have read their books in time?
And in our days it's not really better: The opinions of Paris Hilton are well known around the world. Nobody can quote a philosopher of today. If he was able to find a publisher, his written words stand squeezed between other books on a shelf, covered with a patina.

Of course the written word is there for ever (anyway, let´s hope so, as we never know what will happen to this world of ours). Just think of the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt and the symbols of, for instance, the Maya Indians of Peru (there are many other examples, cannot remember them now, sorry).
But also the spoken word can have great impact on people as we have TV and Internet. Remember Martin Luther King and his speech: I believe ..... His speech has been archived for future generations, as well as speeches by other more or less important persons. Some good speeches, some not so good, some terrible!
Another thing, bad words said to a person, can have a very bad impact for the person in question or even destroy that person´s life!
Interesting question!
Happy Holidays to you from Finland!

Of course - this is because the written word can come back to haunt you at a later date, rather than the spoken word.
Once you speak, it's done & over with. Once you write, it's there until destroyed.

definately , beacuse spoken words can be kept in ur memory for a small period of time but if written they can stay with u forever. to prove this do u know what did the great scientists and novelists spoke out from their mouth, u don't. but u surely know what they wrote. u read them i read them and the next generation would also do the same as they are written but not spoken.

spoken word is heard by few and then fades into the past...but written word is engraved onto its tablet for all time, for anyone who comes across it to read, digest and relay back to everyone they know.
