Isn't part of baptism to 'cleanse' oneself of original sin?

different opinions on this one. First when he came up out of the water the holy ghost descended upon him like a dove. So possibly to receive the holy spirit. Next possibly just to set the example for the rest of us. Water emersed baptism. He told John that he must suffer it so and baptize him when John said he did not want to because he was not worthy.

Jesus baptism was a symbol of him presenting himself to God to do his will. A new relationship where he eventually would give up his life for mankind sins. Romans 5:12 tells us why we all are in the state that we are into today. There is a misconception about baptism today. A baby cannot reconize the seriousness of this. You need to be an adult to make a conscious decision to dedicted yourself to do Gods will, not like Jesus did but to do his will and ask for forgivness of sins.
So baptism is just the start. As far as forgivness there is alot more involved. You must manifest this in your life by your actions and conduct everyday. Other wise there can be no forgiveness if you just keep going back without trying to stop.
Oh well I hope you will understand and read the scripture yourself this might help. God Bless.

I believe ,
That that was Jesus being reborn to the holy spirit. As the skys and the kingdom of heaven had open and the holy spirit was over him as a dove and the he was taken to the desert immediately after for 40 days being tempted by the evil one 3 times. After this he was again blessed with the Holy Spirit and began the work with the authority of God and the Holy spirit. I believe this is an example that we all should follow in becoming "born again" at an adult age (Jesus was about 30 years of age) with prayer and baptism to receive the Holy Spirit and to know Jesus possible gaining eternal life as Christians.

I may be wrong, I've been praying for guidance and reading the Bible. I could simply be looked at as ignorant Prodisen. I was raised catholic and baptized as a child, but to follow Jesus is to be baptized as an adult. this was being done by the Profit John the Baptist, for years before Jesus came to him. John the baptist only discriminated against the pharasys or the scribes (calling them vultures?), no others. Jews, gentiles or Greeks im sure he may have baptized.
Again, this is what I believe. I hope not to sin by saying something incorrect about the "Teacher" the "Father" and importantly "the Holy spirit" which if you blasphemy against will never be forgiven.

God Bless everyone's spirit and love each other as you love yourselves!

Baptism does not cleanse from sin, Jesus' death on the cross does. However, Jesus was baptized to show us an example of how we are to follow Him in baptism. Baptism does not save- it is an outward expression of an inward change. Jesus humbled himself to be baptized to show us an example- He did not need to be cleansed.

Jesus told John to suffer it so that the scriptures be fulfilled.
As some of the others have replied: It was an example for all of us. Jesus gave the apostle Peter the keys to heaven and hell which refers to repentance and, baptism (Act's 2:38). It
signifies Death, Burial and, Resurrection to a new life in Christ.

No, baptism does not cleanse from sin, but repentance does. Jesus had nothing to repent of.
But John the Baptist asked Jesus the same question.

There was no such thing as baptism until Christianity developed and this was decades after the death of Jesus.

Baptism is a symbolic gesture, not a religion. But please don't tell this to the religions.
