These are the logical possibilities I think of.
1. Jesus was not god
2. The person who got crucified was not Jesus
3. This portion of gospel is fabricated.
4. Jesus was fooling others (I do not believe so)
I think any of the first three possibilities could be true.

Good grief, people! Jesus was real and He knew His purpose. Even while Jesus walked this earth, He was always performing the 2nd part of the trinity. But when Jesus was on that cross, He bore the sins of all of man. And for the "first" time in His life He felt His Father's absence. The Trinity had been severed temporarily. Think about it. The heavenly Father cannot look upon sin. He is perfectly holy, without blemish. Scripture is clear that this is why Jesus came, so that we could be restored back in fellowship with God through repentance and forgiveness. This verse shows that Christ did not just endure the physical and mental pain of the cross, but He suffered intense emotional pain because our sins He bore caused His Father to turn away. We should think long and hard about what our sins cost Jesus.

Because God had said in the Old Testament, 'Accursed is anyone hung on a tree'. Christ became a cursed person on the stake. The Old Testament also says God cannot look upon sin so he had to turn his back on Christ when all the sins of the world were borne by him on Calvary. Christ probably felt the pain of God doing that more horrendous than the physical pain. For a time, he felt alienated from the God-head. He knew he had done no sin and was being punished unjustly. But he had chosen to go through with it, as a willing sacrifice. That's why he stayed put on that cross, till his last words, 'It is finished!'

I decided to change this answer due to the fact that there are two Gospel which state something different.
John 19:30
Luke 23:46
In general concept he delivered the spirit, that is the Ghost had left him, So that is a big controversy, because of the fact that from the beginning he knew that he was to testify with his own resurrection. It would not make sense to say that. And even when the people of that time understood that he was calling Elijah it denotes that speech was not clear.
Added the fact that things could have been altered or added.

A son has every right to ask his father if the son feels that although his father weilds tremendous authority over human affairs, then why doesn't the father let his dear son alone to suffer at the hands of ignorant barbarians. This was a human lament that proved beyond doubt that although Jesus was a divine incarnation but even his divinity was influenced by the fralities of human body.

Your question is very good! Not just because of the logic involved in it but also because it rakes up the hypocricy involved in a doctrine being promoted since centuries now about "son of god". Let me point out to you some loop holes in the theory of crucification which should answer your question as well, hopefully!
1. Religions all over the world acknowledge GOD as someone who does not have kids or parents then how can JESUS be son of god.
2. Will GOD allow HIS son to be crucified, why? If forgiving sins of people is any hint then that is even worse as GOD is capable of forgiving one's sins without having to kill someone else. Also, does that mean sins of all christians to come till the last day of earth have been forgiven? If yes, then that is perilous, to say the least, as people will take it for granted and unleash the devil within, right?
3. Besides, the quote "My God, my God,why hast thou forsaken me"? shows that there was no cordination between GOD and JESUS, It looks more like GOD sacrificed JESUS'S life without intimating him about this beforehand? His so called son?
There never was and will never be any cordination in this story simply because that's what it is; a story, concocted by peole with vested interests desperate to writeoff the legitimacy of PROPHET MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.H) as the last PROPHET of ALLAH. Not that we muslims respect PROPHET ISA(P.B.U.H) any less but there is only ONE GOD and HE needs no son or father. The entire universe is HIS family.

Bible Believer and Sasi have answered your question beautifully. I would just like to add that being forsaken by God is the worst thing that could possibly happen to anyone. The anguish that Christ must have felt, to be utterly, totally alone in the whole universe because he had taken on the sin of all humanity to pay the ultimate price so that we could be redeemed. Such love. Such humility. Such obedience.
Wasted on some, unfortunately.

First, He was quoting Psalm 22. Josephus says that He quoted the whole Psalm.
Second, I Corinthians 5:21 says that He,(Jesus), who knew no Sin became Sin, that we could become the Righteousness of God through Him. When Jesus was on The Cross, He became the Vicarious Sacrifice for the Sin of all Mankind. For that instant, He was separated from the Father, thus His cry, "My God ! My God ! Why have You forsaken Me ?"
Merry Christmas!

As when the Spirit came upon Him at his baptism so the Spirit was lifted on the cross at the moment that he was taking on himself the sin of mankind and as the goat sent into the wilderness he bore our sins and took the penalty of them and carried them away. Since no sin was found in Him death had no hold and therefor even our sin could not hold him in the grave and death. The soul that sins shall die" He did not sin by choice.
He made right decisions. Loving God and fellow man.

Looks like alot of good answers already here. Here's my 2pts worth: This statement is part of a 3 step process, to me.
God in human form - Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ - allows us to look at our humanness in the midst of overwhelming pain and suffering and how we doubt when feeling tortured and condemned in our walk on the planet. Christ did not doubt, but the natural human man part, the Jesus-part, cried out to show us that even in our darkest moment of despair it is we who move away mentally from God and feel separated, disconnected, abandoned, and not God moving away from us. Abba shows in verbal form how Jesus experienced 'The Father and I are One'. And we find out quickly that, indeed, Jesus was not forsaken. Even the strongest minded human has weakness in thought that lead to separation thinking around God. But God is still there, the Moving Force.
thanks for a great q in my opinion.
{Edit: Jesus also said It Is Now Beginning - not it is finished as some scholars claim - the resurrection process begins after the giving over of oneself completely into God's 'hands'- as Jesus also stated ... into Thy hands...- there is the Divine and Eternal Resurrection Power.} Just my opinion. :)

He carried the largest burden in history for all mankind. He had to feel a bit forsaken in human form. Yet He went ahead with God's Will unselfishly. Glory to God Our Risen King!
