Wise people (seeker) says that Guru is greater than God. Realized (Guru) will say that Guru is not important. And both are true from their perspective. A realized person always dwells in God, for that matter that person is God itself.

Guru has already walked on the spiritual path and can always guide and help us. When a seeker moves on a spiritual path, s/he attains knowledge and special power (Shidhis), which amplifies ones ego. Simple solution is surrender to Guru.

Patanjali says "PurvayshamApiGuruKalananAvachadat", which means that One Who can not be cut by time is the Guru. By this definition either our Soul or Ishwar is our Guru.

In my opinion, Guru is a process in which has two aspects a giver and receiver. If one is receptive enough then s/he can attain from any thing - it can be nothingness or a stone or a satue or nature or tree or family or animal or time or body or Universe or Ishwar itself. But if you are not receptive and close minded then nothing will happen.

The great guru may be equal to God as he has experienced Him and willing to help others to reach Him too, but, not greater than God.Guru is a path on which the seeker can walk and reach God and to that extent Guru is incomparably great, selfless and unrelenting!

I know I am going to run against some Sanskrit slokhs.
NO NO NO. Except God himself is Guru. Dakshinamoorty.

Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu
Guru Devo Maheswarah
Guru Sakshath Parabrahma
Thasmai Sri Gurave Namah

If you define God as infinity, mathematically nothing can be greater than infinity.
If you have to reach to the bank manager through chaprasi at gate, who is greater?
I beg to differ from Aradhana. Chaprasi can stop you so he is important, but he is not the manager.

If you think God is human, then the realized or enlightened person is a God.But they never say they are God,but they can show the path to realize the God power within any one.

They declare themselves as only a GUIDE who shows the path to realize who or what the God is.

One should know that the formless God power cannot be human, but can make a man realize what is the real truth.

So to me a real Guru is EQUAL to God ,not greater than God.

It depends.
If you sincerely worship the Guru, then the Guru becomes greater than God.
In fact, the Guru is none other than God.

yes.. a guru is greater than god. It takes a guru to take you to god. If its not for a guru, not all of us can be blessed with the fruit of enlightment. If its not for a guru, not all can recoganise what god is. If it is not for a guru, not all can find him.
