I think it depends on where you live and what your child's interests are. If your child likes sledding, have a sledding party (based at your house) and walk to a nearby hill. Like soccer?...have a soccer party at the school's soccer field, etc.

Great ideas that my kids have done...

1) At a farm--pony rides, milking cows. I had a child obsessed with farm animals. This party was a hit!

2) Pool party at nearby hotel's indoor pool. Just make sure that you have lots of supervision for the guests.

3) At a park--lots of open space and activities.

4) Gymboree - fun activities--no one will be bored!

5) Roller Skating Rink.

Kids like parties. Period. You can't go wrong!

We just had our son's 5th birthday party at a bowling alley....sooooo much fun for all the kids AND adults. We, however, rented out the alley (it was a small 8-lane alley) so that we would avoid strangers being around the kids. It was VERY worth it and one of the best parties we've had.

chuck e cheese......so many people said it before me.
I see so many young kids ages 10 and younger having parties thrown there for them. I'm sure your 5 year old would LOVE going there!
