As stated in this thread by my fellow service members, your friend could be right in the thick of a firefight before he has his sea bag unpacked if he was sent here to Iraq. Your friend could also remain on board a ship during his entire tour, it all depends on the "needs of the Navy". Not everyone here volunteered for this duty, some were told to report, but they all do their jobs as professional as they can to complete the mission with everyone they went "outside the wire" with. Point being, you'll have to stay in contact with him to see where his tour takes him!

More then likely your friend will remain on the ship BUT if their particular skills are required off ship then off they go. The Navy has other ground units then the SEALS and Marines. They have Sea Bees for example, their Engineer units that build stuff all around the place. A mechanic may be needed to repair vehicles or equipment so your friend is right to be ready but don't get too worried. There are operations world wide to be sent to. Iraq is just whats on the news these days, we do far that isn't on the nightly news.

Yeah- sure- People are told join the Navy and your are safe on a ship out in the middle of the Ocean, you will safely see beautiful ports, and safely watch the army, air force, and marines do all the hard work. THE FACT IS: All services hold some type of ground Ops (or attached to another branch) and can be in harms way no different than any other service.

Navy is being sent to Iraq to fill Civil Affairs roles in Iraq under the Army. If the person has a skill that Civil Affairs needs, they could be tapped.
I worked with 8 "Narmy" myself on my last tour to Iraq. Same goes for the Air Force.
This was started about 2 years ago.

Your friend should be safe. The Only Navy personnel who serve on the ground are SEALS, SEABEES, and Navy Corpsman attached to Marine units. There are a few other exceptions but not many.

Yes it is possible, all rates are being sent to Iraq & Afghanistan as IA (Individual Augmentees) meaning they could be doing anything anywhere. Their deployments could be from a few months to 1 year depending on what they are doing. Some are being asked if they want to go and others are being told they are going. This is to help give some relief to those that are there.

not at all. Besides SeaBees, which are Engineers and construction men, there are SEALs as well as what is called IAs. these are INDIVIDUAL Sailors who have been loaned to the Army or Marine Corps to fill a gap in their ranks. they could end up doing anything from paperwork to kicking down doors.
additionally, entire Commands deploy as ground units: typically aircrew squadrons.

If your friend deploys with his normal navy unit it is highly likely that he will go down with the ship! However, if he is being sent as a lone augentee, he could be performing convoy security operations throughout iraq with other out of place soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. However, tell him to stop whining as he did raise his right hand and swore an oath to defend FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY at home and ABROAD just as we all did.

I have been to Iraq twice now and the most time when I saw Navy personnel they were either Sea Bees or EOD (Explosive Ordinance Detail). As for anytime else they were in Kuwait.
