As someone who has had at least one lab in the household for the last thirty years, I can tell you that you will find as many different personalities in labs as you would if you picked a group of humans at random. I've had labs who wanted to be lap dogs (nothing like a ninety pound dog jumping on your groin, ouch!) and I've had ones that wouldn't stand still for ten seconds to be petted. I would have to say as far as being protective that most of them were/are protective of their family, some to distraction (poor UPS guy). But, obviously, I think they're a great dog or I wouldn't have had so many. I just always liked to think of them as a garbage disposal on four legs.

YES! Labs are wonderful dogs! They are especially good with kids, too. They are fiercely protective and loyal to their family, altho, with my lab, he would demand to be petted and then whoever is there can take the silver :) My lab actually wil try to SIT on my kids if he thinks they are in danger! They are a wonderful, gentle, loving large breed dog!

I have two labs and they love me to death. They are brother and sister and they love each other. What ever you do don't try to come in my yard or you'll get the business, you'll hear the loudest booming bark there is, they love to protect there owners. When they were pups they loved to chew on stuff, that seems to be a trat of the breed. Dogs rule.

Yes, it's normal. From what I've heard, labs, especially golden labs, are extremely protective of their family. This is even more so in females because of their motherly instinct. I have even heard that they will sleep near the center of the home so that they can be an equal distance away from everyone.

Labs are usually very loving dogs. Mine is also very protective of my 18 year old son.(he was 11 when we got her as a puppy) She is so protective that when his girlfriend comes over she growls and jumps on her. The dog has never acted this way with anyone before.

Loving and loyal are both very true of this breed, but compared to a dobie, having a protective lab it sorta rare... still pretty cool though.

I don't know about protective, But our female lab would always like to go to sleep at night with her head on my pillow. As soon as I went to bed. She would she would scoot over and always like to and put her Head on my pillow. She always wanted to be with me all the time. She died last week of old age & medical problems.

Labs are one of the best breeds. All of my cousins have them, and they are by far one of the best dogs ever.. It is completely normal for these breeds to absolutely love their owners
