I am a Christian, and there are many, many things that I love about Christmas.

However, I feel that the way that it is observed is totally antithetical to Christian teachings.

Its all about excess, luxury, and hedonism.

We give to those who we are confident will give back to us.

We have one big out pouring of charity to the poor only to forget about them for the rest of the year.

We have many traditions that have NOTHING to do with Christ.

Christmas has been taken over by market forces who cater to consumers.

Where did we go wrong?

I realise that not everyone is like this, but I see so much of this i our society, and it makes me kind of frustrated.

Christmas should not be about holing up with your family and exchanging gifts, and drinking and eating yourself silly. It should be about practising Christian teachings and spearding the Gospel message.

What do you think?

you are a truly amazing person. Each year we take christ more and more out of christmas! Easter is even worse! its all about the gifts , not the real reason. We should celebrate the christ child, not macys sale ads! and there is no easter bunny in my king james bible.
God bless!

Hmm? Maybe some Christians are like that but the ones I know are serving God 365 days a year. Speaking for myself, I don't go into debt, I give all year and everyday whether it be time, material or financial (they say you can never out give). If you look at the world's idea of a "Christian and Christmas," then yes, I would agree with you. Please don't confuse the two. Actually, to me Christmas is an individual thing. You don't have to and should not follow the world's version of it.

The origin of the celebration is basically where Christianity departed from the truth.

That was the beginning of the sham.

You can share the gospel with more people if you will shine a light on the darkness of this season than in trying to make this season out to be something it's not.

You're "preaching' to the choir.

You need to focus your energies on the big box corporations that are looking at their bottom line.

You're inundated with all the commercialism at a national level but you're not seeing what's happening at the grassroots.

Have a Merry Christmas... if you have the capacity to do so...
and may the Son of the Most High walk with you always.

For a moment there I was thinking, "Hey, this is a pretty decent christian." That all changed, however, when I read the penultimate paragraph. What a silly thing to say -- spread the gospel. There are people who are hungry, cold, and alone. They need food and warmth and care, not religious mumbo jumbo.

December 25th...this is not the day Christ was born, but He was born on a day so we may as well celebrate His birth on an agreed day. I so do agree with what has been said about what it has become. We try to make this a time for our children to reflect on what they can give Christ. If we are to celebrate it as His birthday, then this is only right. This season is all about giving and a reminder to have a giving heart. He gave all, we should give to honor Him. Our family has changed many things regarding our celebration.

Well, aside from the joy and fun my kids get out of their presents, I'm able to give my adopted grandaughter a bunch of cool science toys as she's very advanced. I'm also able to give my neighbors 4 year old daughter an nice gife, which I want to do because she lost her mom this year.

Christmas, like life, is what you make it.

I am a believer. I accept Scripture as the rule of faith and practice. Therefore I reject "Christianity" as currently practiced, and I know that many aspects of the heathen winter festival are violating principles of YHVH and should not be participated in by a believer.

You've put into words, what I've been feeling about the Christmas "season" for years. ( I just wasn't brave enough)
Thank you. Merry Christmas to you!
