If you don't believe in it, why celebrate it? My former foster mom supposedly doesn't believe in Christmas, & she gives gifts, has family gatherings, & enjoys dinner. I'm 24 now, but I remember when I was 16, I just got new braces on my teeth, & the orthodontic assistant put Christmas colored bands on the braces without allowing me to choose what colors. My former foster mom went off on me & said I made a fool out of her & embarrassed her because of my "red & green braces". Another time, I was like 8, & I asked a lady @ bible class what she got for Christmas, & the foster mom pulled & dragged me by the ear from the bathroom, all the way to our seat in class.

I was never told until I was 16 that we don't celebrate Christmas because of our non-denominational beliefs. I always thought we did, since we had family gatherings, dinners, & gifts.

You must mean you didn't celebrate Christmas, or believe in it, as a RELIGIOUS holiday. Many people don't, but, they still enjoy celebrating it as a SECULAR holiday, with gifts, food, and decorations. It sounds like that's the way it was with your foster mom. To each his own...

Your foster mom sounds like she had some real "issues" and liked blaming kids for things that were beyond their control. I'm VERY sorry you had to FEEL the brunt of her anger, that should have been directed somewhere else.

Well it's kinda hard not to celebrate it, with all the spirit going around town. I mean, think about it, it's almost like a bribe. Your house would have no lights, and all the other houses on the street would. No decorations, no nothing. It would be hard not to have anything or do anything. So I guess the answer is that people who don't celebrate Christmas do it to just go along with the flow and the rest of the world that celebrates Christmas.

P.S. Sorry about your foster mom, and the fact that you don't celebrate Christmas. You missed out on a lot with your childhood.

Happy Holidays

The day is far evolved from just a religious one. The traditions become more important than the tradition. Non-Christian folks celebrate it because they celebrated the Santa legend as a child.

I don't do Christmas...I do Yule, which has been around longer and included presents, parties, trees, etc.

I am Wiccan with a Christian family, so I celebrate both Winter Solstice and Christmas. My husband is Christian also, so our kids are in a 2 religion household, and we want them to learn both. We do Winter Solstice in my house, Christmas Eve with my family, and Christmas Day with my in-laws. I am not opposed to or offended by celebrating someone else's holiday. It is a matter of respect for each other's beliefs.
