Have you tried inserting a valid system disc?
Like the one you created BEFORE formating the drive?

What seems to be happening is that your wife's laptop is attempting to boot up from either the hard drive, which has no Operating System installed, or the CD-ROM drive which contains your backup Windows 98 CD, which is not bootable.

If you already have a boot floppy disk, you'll need to change the BIOS settings to allow it to boot from that drive.

What you need to do is boot from a floppy disk that has been made bootable. You can download one from the following site. (They download as executable files, so you'll need to double-click on the .exe file for it to compile a bootable floppy. Obviously, you'll need to have a blank floppy disk for it to write the information to.)

When the laptop has booted up, you'll see C:\ on screen.

Type D:\ and press Enter. Now type Setup.exe and press Enter again.

Hopefully, this will get you back on the road.

If you need any more help, feel free to contact me via email.

This error means that the computer cannot find an operating system to load. If you have a Windows Installation CD put that in the cd drive and reboot your computer. If not try and borrow one from a friend.
