Fitted hats run within an eighth of an inch so i wouldn't buy him one unless you knew exactly what size his head was. If your gonna buy one as a guess 71/8 or 71/4 our probably average sizes. Good luck

Yeah, that's what I always do. Just go to a hat shop and try on the style cap you like and that will give you an idea. Caps are like shoes though a size 12 of one shoe may be different from a size 12 of another shoe. I have many hats, supposedly the same size, that fit a little smaller or slightly bigger.

There is a formula for measuring hat size, but you'd obviously need to get out a tape measure and do the division. (Divide the circumference by pi to get the number -- 23 inches around works out to 7.25.)
The easier method is to have him try on a bunch of hats and see what works. And easier still would be to buy him an adjustable hat; they look fine for the most part.

Somewhere in between 7 1/4 or 7 1/2 seems to be the norm. Just be sure and give him the reciept in case it doesn't fit.

If this is a gift - you could take one of his old hats and match up the size - otherwise take him with you.
If you cannot get a hat, maybe someone could measure the inside of one of his hats for you - - -
As long as you leave the tags on it - a hat can be returned after the holidays.
