I am not sure about 2012 exactly but the world is definitely close to very ugly times. Certainly within the next ten years. Not for the filthy rich or people with recognized extreme talents but surely for common people all over the world. lets take a look at some of the reasons :
Realistic :
1> Global climate change
2> The magnetic poles of the earth are shifting again which means worse weather
3> We are approaching another period where the solar energy output would max out and chances of a lethal solar outburst are greater add to more bad weather
4> We are running out of fuels fast and the world is gearing up for conflicts
5> Increasing population has always been accompanied by major epidemics. Countries like India, China where hygiene is not good and population is very high are sitting on time bombs.
6> Yellowstone National Park is due for another Volcanic eruption. It happens around every 700,000 years. The last one happened about that many years ago. It may take many years before it goes off or it may happen tomorrow.
7> Terrorists want to terrorize they really don't want to wipe out entire humankind. Being fools (as intelligent people would never do what they are doing) they can set off chain of events that may lead to Armageddon or a Biological/Chemical/Nuclear attack that may cripple a large part of the human population. (No weapon knows whom to hurt and whom not to)
8> Scientists believe we are living through and extinction event partly fueled by us. Many species have become extinct every year in increasing numbers for the past 10 to 15 years. If this effects the crops we highly depend upon global starvation is a prospect.(Wheat prices global are supposed to hit a max this year)
Whatever happens in 2012 we will just have to face it.

Doomsingers always have an apocolyptic year in mind. Have since the beginning of religious history. The last was the millenium, the year 2000. or 200l, if you wanted to be mathematically correct. As you will recall, it was just another day, the sun came up in the morning, as usual, and life went on.
I am sure it will come up in the morning every day of the year 2012, and the world will have its troubles, the same as every year from the beginning of time.
I intend to just continue living my life to the fullest I can, and if
by chance the world should end, I will go knowing that I have been the best person I could be, and with peace.

No. Those old civilizations seers couldn't see into the next dimension of thought back then, the 5th. They didn't have the brain connections to do so yet.
The "world as they knew it" has already dramatically changed...from equal rights for females to technology. It's not the end of the world - just the "end" of the world as they knew it.

Every generation thinks thier generation is the one that will see the end of the world. Every generation has its "Mayan Calender" if you will. Every culture has a creation myth, and every culture has its "apocolypse" myth. And everyone thinks its going to happen to them while they are alive. Yes I think plenty of bad things will happen in 2012, just like plenty of bad things happened in 2007 - but it will just be anohter year.

I don't think it will happen in 2012. I do know that Russia and Iran are about to gang up on Israel. I think we are in the end times, but I'm not scared. Christ is coming soon!

Truthfully, what does it really matter. We cannot change it if it is going to happen, we will just have to live (or die) with whatever happens, so why worry about it?
