1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ...... + 95 + 96 + 97
= (1+97) x 97 / 2
= 98 x 97 / 2
= 9506 / 2
= 4753

1+2+3+4+5+....+95+96+97
this is an arithmatic series, T1 = 1, common diference d= 1, and the number of terms n= 97
To get this sum use the formula, S = (n/2)( 2t1 + ( n-1)d)
S = 97/2 ( 2*1 + 96 *1)
S = 97/2 ( 98)
S = 4753

You asked only till 97 OK?
get started.

n=97

Formula:= n * (n + 1) / 2
= 97 * (97 + 1) / 2
= 97 * 98 / 2
= 97 * 49
=4753

:. The answer is..
1+2+3+4+5+6........+95+96+97 = 4753

1+97=98,
2+96=98,
3+95=98 and so on....
then use (98x48)+49 to find the answer, which is 4753

1 + 97 = 98

2 + 96 = 98

3 + 95 = 98,

Ca you calculate the answer from the above hint ?

Hope I`ve helped, Twiggy.

sum = n(n + 1)/2 ---------- n = 97
= (97 + 98)/2
= 4753

2nd method
sum of 1 to 100 = 5050
so required sum = 5050 – (98 + 99 + 100)
= 5050 – ( 99 × 3)---------- (sum = middle No. × total No. here middle No. is 99 and total numbers = 3)
= 5050 – 297 = 4753

EDIT
Dear Sahithya
Your formula is correct. But is is useful when the series is not continuous i.e. when series is not from 1 to n
when it is continuous easier is sum = n(n+1)/2

hmm, 1+2+3+4+5=12
95+96+97=288
add em' up is 300.

if you want me to find the missing number in the middle then you have to give me the amount of number of the numbers all summed up instead of 300.

oh wait, this could be high school or college math; i have no idea.
