I am going to buy a wireless USB adapter. I just wanted to make sure that will this actually connect me to the internet via my router?
Also, my parents computer that I'm going to connect to is Windows 2000, but mine is Windows XP. Will I still be able to get internet?

Will this be all that I need?
Do I need anything else with this, other than two computers and a router, so I can get internet?

Well, there are several tthings you must check before saying you can connect to the internet.

you must check what wireless version does your router provide.

there is A, B, G and N.

So... this makes another point... you must check your wireless card (or USB adapter) to see if they both can stand the same signal and same channels.

MAybe, it all depends on how secure you want your internet connection to be.... you must check both peripherals so they have the same encryption type. If you have a very secure router... but your usb wirless adapter dont support that wireless encryption... the usb adapter wont connect to your interent router.

Ahh, almost forgot.... you must first install your usb wireless adapter on the computer/laptop... some adapters need special drivers so they can work properly when detected,

You didn't actually say WiFi router, it is WiFi? The USB wifi should work fine as long as you are reasonably close enough. The router "should" have all the internet settings already if your parent's computer is connected to it, meaning the router box is connected to the internet provider modem and the first computer is connected to the router, and all the internet trafic goes through the router. When you connect with another computer, it will go through the router to the intenet, not necessarily through the first computer.

If you want to actually get to the other computer, you have to make sure the Workgroup name in network settings is the same on all computers, and have to set up what folders to share, usually in the properties on each folder. I am not familiar with win2000, I know my XP will share with others like Winme and vista. (Vista is harder)

both one among those are the very similar difficulty except one significant enormous difference, one among made to slot right into a PCI slot interior a computing device and is way larger. A USB one will oftentimes only plug right into a loose accessible USB slot and your operating device will deploy it and it truly is usable immediately (some a lot less common branded usb adapters will favor drivers put in manually). i might want to represent the USB one because it would want to nicely be actual switched between computers/laptops and they arrive in countless sizes, and some have bluetooth and ability for exterior antennas.

I done the exactly same thing. All i done was first insert the USB adaptor into the computer (in the usb port) obviously, then you need the cd. For example, My Internet company is telstra, so i inserted the TELSTRA CD. Then what you do next is; Right click on my computer, and go down to properties, and then click on the Hardware, then "device manager", and you will see a new icon there called "what ever your Internet is called" Example mines called "net gear". Anyway once you found it, it just click on it, and click "update driver" and that's it! :)

If you need more assistance please don't hesitate to contact me via email. good luck.

You should tell which companies adapter you are going to use.
I tell you that USB adapter is very useful for internet though it will cost you a bit extra. You can use it with windows XP it works very fine but with windows 2000 its speed is reduced and it is just like slow dial up. I am using PTCL wireless on XP and it's speed is 250 kb/s and it cost's me .10 us$ per hour.
