It all depends on the sales person you are listening to.
Both are excellent choices so let's look at the design.
The AMD is a true Quad processor while the Core 2 Quad is 2 core 2 duos graphed on one chip.
The AMD has a faster throughout than Intel.
But even after all these years AMD still has not solved all their over heating problems.
So I stick with Intel.
Unrelated point: Microsoft is on the outs with Intel since they now make chips for Apple. So Microsoft partnered with AND and the entire Vista platform was engineered and tested on AMD processors.

lol, so many answers, amd intel amd intel
During the days of Athlon, AMD was the better processor. Intel's P4 wasn't really a powerful CPU when it comes to multimedia and gaming. So, many people tend to remember than and expect it to continues. Well, things change
Intel's new mircoarchitecture that you get in the C2Q CPU, is far more superior than anything AMD could ever come up with up to this point. Phenom is a failure. performance wise, it couldn't beat Q6600.
Furthermore, are you aware about the TLB bug in Phenom CPU? A BIOS patch is require to fix that bug, but this patch will bring the performance of an already slow CPU down by 10% to 15%.
A good Phenom will be the B3 revision which will fix this TLB bug, which won't be out till next year Q1. Till then, current Phenom is a crippled CPU.
Right now, your best option is Q6600. The only thing that's good about Phenom is that they offers a budget quadcore CPU below USD200, but the performance certainlt isnt suitable for gaming at the moment.

Definently the Intel, it has a slightly faster clock speed and a Cache twice as big as the AMD, i would definently go for the Intel because they dont heat up as quickly as the AMD in my experiences.

by all means choose the amd but be aware that heat will be an issue especially in a case with the newest video cards which generate a lot of heat themselves. best way around the heat issue is watercooling both the video card/s and the processor.
it's been my experience that intel's chips run hot as well. in a extreme gaming enviroment cooling is an issue.

The processors you are considering are the only two with a red bar.
These are all games benchmarks. I didn't pick and choose...

when it comes to gaming AMD rules over intel. I suggest you better take AMD quad core trust me I've played games on both intel and AMD and AMD is way more better than intel in gaming. don't worry about heating problems cuz as you will be playing games so you will defiantly take a good dx10 graphic card and in most of the graphic cards of dx10 hyper cooling is available and to make a good gaming PC u better take graphic card of dx10. but its your choice which graphic card u take.
