I know that whenever I'm thinking about or learning Astronomy or anything to do with it, I'm always reminded about how small and insignificant I am. It kinda sucks. It especially sucks cuz I love Astronomy so much, but it just depresses me. Anyone else?

Hi.
To be honest, the study of the night sky used to make me feel insignificant...
Over the many years I've been peering through the telescope's eyepiece, I've sensed a change in that feeling, though.
I've come to realize that, though I AM insignificant in the vast scale of things, I'm also a PART of it... Just as you are.

It's by knowing that we are all part of this vast Universe that fills me with a sense of wonder and awe.

We all have our parts to play... We are all parts of it, not excluded from it!
Please don't be depressed!
Think of it the way I do, and let YOUR sense of wonder grow, too!
Clear Skies!
Bobby

I love learning about astronomy too. The physics is complicated though!
I don't feel insignificant but I do wish that humans lived for a bit longer as I will die before we find life elsewhere :-)
I can remember staying up all night to see Neil Armstrong step onto the moon's surface, that wonderful series called The Cosmos by Carl Sagan and now we have the Large Hadron Collider at Cern ready to go in May 2008 and the marvellous Hubble telescope.
Out of all the eras I could have been born, I am so glad I am alive now as these great sweeps forward are possible.

Easily. Everything exists on different scales. So what if the universe doesn't care what happens to the human race - I do and that's what counts as far as I'm concerned. The universe isn't just very very big, it's very very small. If looking on the cosmological scale gets a bit overwhelming look at the microscopic or atomic or sub atomic scale. Then realize that everything is relative. So what if all of human history is an insignificance on a geological let alone cosmological time scale right here right now what we're doing is important to us.

Yes , it makes me feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But it doesn't make me depressed. It's great just to be an observer on the sideline for such a fantastic show! In a way, trying to comprehend the size of the universe helps to put human things in perspective.

Don't forget that all of us are in the same boat. Everyone is pretty much equally insignificant, so why worry?

No it dont depress me because i think of it as learning all about the known and the unknown things all around us, yes we are small and insignificant when it comes to the size of the universe but i am getting all the latest news from space from a good many space sites and I love to study it all, its amazing,,

well, do we feel small and insignificant and KNOW that we are, know what's out there, some of how it all works, and see the beauty of it all or do we play dumb like the animals and miss the whole shebang?.... I'd much rather see it all and know that we humans might be the only sentient beings in the whole Universe that actually can grasp and appreciate the Cosmos.... and that makes me feel bigger and more important than the ants..............

it's like my old science teacher told me.... when I see a falling star, if I hadn't been looking up right then to see it, it might never have existed..... since I see it, it DOES exist and is beautiful and amazing because of me seeing it..... same with this Universe, no?.....

my seeing it all makes it real, therefore, I'm pretty important in the scheme of things..............as I see it......

Any other thing in universe except humans isn't intelligent. Before the astronomy field flourished we used to-- think jupiter saturn are gods. Much powerful and intelligent than us. The stars decide our fate. and other blah blah blah.
Now we know at least nobody else in 500 light years radius is as intelligent as us.
You should feel better now..

No. It helps me understand the dynamics of my existence. I access the most exploratory websites relating to astronomy I can find. There is much to be learned, but the more I learn, the better I feel.

It makes me feel special that we have the privilage to be living on earth. I mean, the outer space is so huge that we need a new word for huge. But yet, here we are (perhaps the only ones but that's another can of worms) in the middle of it all!

Yes, I feel like an embryo on the tip of a pin in comparison to the vastness of the universe.
