Hm--well that's the common perception right?
I don't think that most Christians fall into the narrow-minded category. They honestly are just abiding by what their religion calls for them to do. It's not a question of being open-minded--it's a question of obedience. Anything which goes against the rules of their religion is disobedient and condemnable. So, by default Christians must reject most of what society pushes at them or face eternal fire.
Atheists may come off as jerks because they're constantly attacked and berated for their non-belief. I find that Atheists are much more agreeable than some Christians but often it's just who you talk to. There are many Atheists that I've met who are just as "close-minded" as Christians and have no ability to use higher reasoning.
Also, I think that people in this country have a hard time believing that those without religion can keep morals. I do no belong to a religion but I have very strong morals. It is possible to have religion without morals just as much as it is possible to have morals without religion.
You also don't define what close-minded consists of--not supporting abortion and gay marriage or not being able to use instruments in church? What do you mean by close-minded?
What do you mean by jerk? Using profanity to prove a point? Or someone who just refuses to agree with you?
Remember, it's always the individuals that count. Each person is different and believes different things for different reasons. Before casting someone off as close-minded or a jerk you should evaluate why they believe what they believe.

One finds it hard to take in something, when they think that what they believe is absolute.
You can't explain something, without one person having a degree of bias in one direction.
EVERYONE has an opinion on something, and more often than not, humans are arrogant enough to believe what they think is absolute.
In quite a few circumstances. Not all.
I don't think someone's religious beliefs determine whether they are a jerk or narrow minded... Again.. In quite a few circumstances. Not all.
I'm sure you'll find MOST Christians and Athiests are well thought out people, and have their own reasons in why they believe what they do.
Ultimately, we are all human, and you will come across jerks, and narrow-minded people.
Just don't judge an extended population on your individual experiences. =)
Don't stereotype. On what you've said you make it alright for me to said that all Nihillism believers are mostly generalizers... I know that's not true. Just because of my experiences with a certain type of people, doesn't mean they are all or mostly the same.

Because Christians are in fear and atheists have to overcompensate for that strong opposing element. Christians have always been taught fear and doom and so they act the way they do. Religion is for people who are trying to keep from going to hell. Spirituality is for people who have already been there.
Sweetie, just remain spiritual. Come from a place of love and you will never be lost like they are.

Some Christians are quite hard to take, and can be extremely judgmental. However if you found that being proud and judgmental goes against Catholicism, and that it is all supposed to be about humility and charity, maybe you'd see Christianity differently. Tell those people to judge themselves cause God doesn't care for pride:)

nah, not offended, your entitled to your opinions.
...but...
I'm atheist and most atheists i know are very kind and intellectual people. you can't stereotype a huge group of people based on just a few people you know.
and all of Christians i know are very open minded. in fact, i think its a bit stupid to judge people based on their religious believes.
nihilism's coolio

I'm not offended, felt this way for a while.
You don't need to "belong" to any particular group to be a good person.

I think both parties are so fixated on their beliefs, that they never work on other aspects of their personality. Neither side has any respect or patience for anyone that doesn't believe as they do. It's arrogant, and sorta immature.
