I heard about a rumor that Montreal and Toronto wanna get him. It seems like that Alex does not want to sign a new deal with his current team. I REALLY wanna see him playing in Canada.

To those of you that think the Leafs will be able to get Ovechkin, keep dreaming. The quagmire that the Leafs are in and all the stupid and non thought all the way through decisions that were made to secure the mediocre over priced middle of the road talent that is in Toronto now, has royally screwed the Leafs and ANY hopes for anything to happen in Toronto for many more years to come.

In addition to that. The Caps will not allow Ovechkin to go anywhere. On the rarest of rarest and minutest chances that O V is not matched by the Caps, then I can see the Habs being a reality. However there is also another scenario that people do not talk about. OV is better friends with Malkin,in Pittsburgh than anyone else in the NHL. Malkin is unhappy in Pittsburgh, that is a documented fact. The Caps have the resources and the pull to get Malkin if they wanted to (should he become available). So the more realistic scenario here would be a Caps team with OV,Semin, and Malkin drawing in the crowrds in DC.

This question was also on another blog interestingly enough. Ovechkin is useless in Canada. Think about it. If Ovechkin goes to the Habs is that gonna generate more fans for Montreal and the game (NHL)?. No. Chances are people who are Habs fans are always gonna be Canadians fans. Ovechkin is not gonna make more people in Montreal Habs fans. They already become Montreal regardless. The markets in Canada are already saturated. This means that most of the people there already like hockey and are involved with it de facto. In Washington, Ovechkin is gaining fans for him, the Capitals, and the NHL. The American market is still largely undeveloped and he can help gain fans that previously weren't fans of hockey.

The Gazette had a good point about long term contracts being sort of a cap loophole. If the Habs or Leafs can put together a DiPietro style deal, the Caps might not have the finances to match it. I think MLSE could swing a 20 year 100 million contract if they really wanted Ovechkin bad enough. I can't see Gillett putting up that kind of money though. He's just too smart a business man to bet the farm on anything.

I don't see Montreal doing it. Giving up 5 first round picks just isn't their style.
Now in Toronto, Fergy hates draft picks, something about him seems to get all fugged up in the entire process, however I don't see him being employed in June. A new GM, though, may want to come in and make a name for himself with a big name signing, so I wouldn't rule this out entirely. I guess the whole thing depends on whether Washington decides to let him go or not, which I really can't see happening.

Well, Ovechkin is certainly going to be much better off playing on another team. I don't know if he's going to be able to play under all the pressure in Canada though, but I'd like to see him playing in Canada. How does this sound: Goal by Toronto Maple Leaf forward Alexanderrrr Ovechkinnnn!!

Ovechkin has no choice but to stay in Washington. He is a restricted free agent until he turns 25 or has a certain number of years of service in the NHL. The Capitals have stated that they can and will match any offer he receives. I don't see anything that either the Canadiens or Maple Leafs have to offer that would entice me to give up Ovechkin in a trade.

Why would he want to stay in Washington? That team is never going to build a winner. As far as going to Toronto, they are worse off than the Caps. Montreal, is a maybe, but doubtful. If he is going to put himself out there, and leave the Caps, I would think it would be to go to a team that has the chance of winning.

i want a million dollars and i ain't getting it anytime soon. his deal is such that he will be in Washington for a minimum of 3-4 more years (Washington can and will match any offers he gets as a rfa, the max is within there ability so he will be locked up. if i could find the article talking about it i would post it.

edit after reading the article that u just posted i would like to comment there isn't a gm out there that wouldn't love to have ao ... but Washington has made it clear they will match any offers put out there. plus the article i read thought mentioned a cap on how much he could make at this juncture though other reg in the section could confirm that as true or false. it may just have be referring to the over player cap.

lubers he wont be a f.a. till he is 27

There are 29 teams that want Ovechkin, but Washingtion owns his rights until noon July 1, 2012 (at the earliest) and leonsis has stated he will match any offer thrown at him.

And unlike Vanek, Ovechkin is worth close to $10.26MM

I heard a rumor that every team in the league wants him. Doesn't mean they're gonna get him. I say he stays in Washington.
