Yes, the word still retains its true meaning; but nowadays you'd probably want to drop it from your vocabulary because of its connoting homosexual persons. It's a "loaded" word.

Avoid the confusion, if you are happy; say so.
If you are gay(homosexuel ); say so.
Just say you are gayly happy to not be happily gay. I think that about covers it .

Language changes. You don't hear people using "ye, thy and thee" in their conversations. So don't use gay.
Get with the times man.
