A mass card. You buy it and then bring it to a priest for him to sign it. Its a mark of respect for the deceased and their family.

A card and yourself. If he's mourning his mother I'm sure that he will want to talk to someone about her and how he feels about her death. If you could volunteer to listen when he's ready to talk, I sure that it would be a gift that he would always cherish. I know that's what I would have killed for when my husband died. Just someone to talk to about him.
