i planted some flowers not long ago ,and understood that one stem would yield one small or large flower. i have one stem yielding sixteeen flowers. should this b. i'm not complaining but is this unusual?

Depends on the type. Those grown for seeds like Mammorth Grey Stripe usually only have one. Ornamental types can have several.
