What happens is there body quits producing estrogen and the testosterone gets much more prevalent, which is why people say we grow beards or moustaches. Because the female hormones quit production the ovaries quit working, so then does the uterus, next the periods quit coming, that part women love. But of course while all this is happening the male and female hormones are waging a real war with in the body and causing all kinds of things like: hot flashes, night sweats, hair growth, mood swings, this type of things. A lot of women dread the experience because it signals to us that we are old, but in my mind old is a state of mind, I mean who the their right mind wants having their periods, I mean as soon as you quit having children you should be able to stop those from coming around right? I wish! Menopause can take as little as 2 weeks up to 6 months it is individual as to the woman who is going through it. A lot of women go on hormone replacement therapy after menopause and some women don't it just depends on how comfortable you are with your own body. I hope this answers your question better than some of the other answers I read. Good Luck.

Lots of unpleasant things. It's kind of like when you first started having periods and had to get used to the changes, the pains, and the hormones. When the hormones finally go away, it's even harder getting used to them not being there anymore. You've had about 40 years to get good and accustomed to estrogen. Then there isn't any.
If you thought PMS was bad, just wait until you first start skipping periods. The PMS goes on for weeks until you finally get the period.
Then the periods will stop for months at a time. Then you won't have any at all.
Can't say I miss the cramps, or the feminine hygiene products, but I'd take them all back again if I could just get rid of the damned hot flashes. Estrogen, soy, herbals, nothing made them appreciably better, and they're quite debilitating.
The good news is that most women don't have hot flashes as bad or as long as mine.

They stop having periods
Many (but not all) experience hot flashes and night sweats
Their risk for getting osteoporosis increases
They experience unpleasant symptoms such as vaginal dryness and lack of sexual desire
Some develop an increase in body hair due to declining hormone levels
Many women going through menopause tend to put on weight
This is generally the time when women are now considered to be unable to get pregnant but the truth is for many, that started considerably earlier. That's why women's fertility rates start dropping off while they are still in their 30s and drop precipitiously when they reach their mid-40s.

hot flashes
irritability
sometimes lubricant is necessary
sometimes facial hair can grow
some women become very angry
some feel like their life is over (not true, loving can go on for many more years)
Hormones can be dangerous - that's why a lot of doctors don't give them out anymore. There are, though, natural remedies that you can find at your pharmacy.
