Like someone else said, Tux's are expensive, even to rent. So you should try to find one somewhere cheap like a thrift store or something. That's just my thought.

when the occasion requires a tux, perhaps the best rulle to follow when trying to 'break out' is to wear a lighter brown (beige even) if there are going to be a lot of younger players, or grays and mid tone browns if not.

Of course, if you are a movie star or someone with big bucks, you can wear what you want. otherwise, by wearing a tux, you are deferring respect to whatever guest is being awarded, rewarded, honored, etc.

Fork over the money to rent one. that way you can get out of it and get it out of the closet, letting someone else take care of it. These aren't an item that is pressed into much use by just one person. besides, if you want to buy a suit, there are others that are more comfortable or appropriate, such as church wear, rather than the flashiness of a tux

Yes. Tuxedos are expensive so get a classic one that you like and use it for all special occasions in your future. If you prefer, you can also rent them.

Typically, winter formals are not THAT fancy and don't require tuxedos. Make sure that is the dress code because I suspect most people will be in dress shirts and dress pants rather than tuxedos.

To a winter formal? You should get something fun...like a purple tux or something.

Go for it - there is nothing smarter than a formal tux!
