The Ivy League is an athletic conference in the Northeastern United States, consisting of eight private universities - Harvard,Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, and Brown. Because they have always been academically strong schools, some people believe that somehow "Ivy League" means the best schools. However, there are a number of other schools which rank right up there with them which are NOT part of the Ivy League, such as MIT, the University of Chicago, and Stanford.

A University is a school with many colleges within it. For example, Harvard has a Medical school, Law School, etc. Or is can be divided into groups of study, like Arts & Sciences is separated from Engineering sometimes. A college is where there are no such divisions.

The Ivies are just a bunch of east coast schools that are known for their prestige and are very VERY hard to get into. They are known as the "Ivy League" because they compete against one another in sports. Here are a list of the 8 Ivy League schools:

Brown
U Penn
Harvard
Princeton
Cornell
Dartmouth
Yale
Columbia

There are other groups that are also pretty good schools, like "The Big Ten"

Look at U.S. World and New Report for Rankings of Universities, and you will see that all these schools rank pretty high.

I recently found out that there's really no difference and the only reason why they are 'better' then other universities is because of the history. These colleges have been talked about for so long, they basically got their prestige from longevity. These ivy leagues are universities basically on the east coast of the US. Technically, ivy league is an athletic conference composed of those 8 universities. Basically, the term has come to denote academic excellence and social eliteness. They are top universities, but as I said earlier, simply because individuals have made them just that by speaking them up to that level. It took years. The top professors want to teach there, and because alumni give money back, they are able to employ the top academics to teach at these great schools. Hope this helped.

in accordance to US information international report Princeton & Harvard constantly bypass decrease backward and forward as to who's first and who's 2d (Princeton has been ranked first extra interior the previous 9 years than Harvard). Harvard, is regularly seen the perfect as a results of fact it has the main 'variety call' acceptance. Columbia is amazingly good too (extra perfect than Brown a minimum of). IMO they are close adequate in high quality to a minimum of one yet another that i think of 'in good shape' might desire to make the main important distinction in the place you return to a call to coach/attend & IMO 'in good shape' might desire to have the main important impact on fulfillment while pondering faculties that are this close in high quality. as an occasion, Why attend Harvard in case you hate it, yet love Princeton? you're grades will in all hazard go through at a school you hate (in this occasion Harvard), yet upward push at a school you thrive in (to that end Princeton). basically a concept and maximum of all good good fortune
