Y2K referred to the year 2000 - it seems there were bugs in some computers, and grand fears that all computers would shut down....People stock piled food and other supplies thinkging that banking systems, food chains, and basically everything that is dependent upon computers to operate would collapse in the year 2000......Apparently some of it had to do with time systems in computers....The new year came and went without any of the feared occurences happening. But the fear of Y2K, and the Y2K computer "bug", or problem, was a huge concern through-out 1999.

The Y2K problem was not as severe as it might have been. It involved the changeover of computers from the year 1999 to 2000. Some computers weren't designed to accept this change and just went back to 0000 instead of 2000

People thought that computer programmers had made an error and that a glitch or bug would mean that all computers when the year 2000 hit would reset to show the year was 1900, thus wiping out all kinds of information and causing havoc, shutting down systems, etc. The glitch was fixed on the few old computers that needed it, and for the rest, it was all hype, never was a problem.

year 2000 -k=thousand--back in the1970s when computers came into daily use, the storage capacity was rated in thousands of bytes not gazillion that it is today. so every thing was shortened up to save space. 1989 was stored as 89, and no one planned ahead to 2000. so when 2000 came along it would read it 1900. how can you buy a house in 1990 and make the last payment in 1920. some computers were stubborn and wouldnt accept the change, mostly utility company computers.

the people thought when the year changed from 1999 to 2000 there would be problems with the computers throughout the world and things like electricity and SSN's would be eliminated and other personal identification figures would be deleted hence causing chaos.

YEAR 2000 - they thought all the computers would fry and not switch from 1999 to 2000. Thought everything would malfunction, start at 0000...etc.
