I don't think that a few people refusing to buy Japanese goods will be noticed by the Japanese government. It would have to be a whole nation or many nations, like when Europe boycotted the fur industry of the US. If people are still buying things made in China knowing what they know about China, why would they stop buying things made in Japan? I really don't think it's going to happen. The other proposed solution urged by the boycott website cited, to put ads in newspapers to 'raise awareness', will do little or nothing either, because not enough people care about the whales, especially people who read newspapers are the least likely to care about Nature (they are more likely to care only about their stocks and bonds). The naieve website says to vote; that is meaningless; vote where? on what? for whom? when? If this information is not clear to the public, nothing will happen. People need to be told exactly, in no uncertain terms, what to do, or else they will do nothing at all.

As as article on the Sea Shepherds website notes, http://seashepherd.org/news/media_071219_1.html the most effective means of saving the whales at this point in time, is direct action. We do not have time to 'raise the consciousness' of the masses of zombies over the next few decades or however long it takes to raise enough awareness to get people to actually act; by then, the whales will be long dead. Like the article says, Greenpeace and others have been taking pictures of the whales being stolen out of the ocean for decades, and it is pointless; no whales were saved by the pictures of all those years of 'raising awareness'; only direct action has saved some of the whales.

It is not only whales that the Japanese steal from the protected sanctuary waters during mating season, but it is any kind of oceanic animal; it seems that that they would like to swiftly hunt into extinction every kind of animal that they can get their neanderthalic hands on. I happen to have been in Antigua a few years ago, talking to the chef of the resort where I stayed, asking him if the fish were local. He said "oh no, the fish are not local; there are NO local fish; they are all gone; the Japanese have come and taken them all in their big hunting ships, so now we have to import fish from the US." He went on to say that Antigua is in a silent war with Japan, which is not printed in any newspaper anywhere. He said that Antigua confiscated two of the Japanese ships by force and will not give them back because the Japanese are illegally coming into the Antiguan water and taking everything that exists, leaving absolutely nothing, not even two fish to reproduce.

In my opinion, the only way the Japanese will stop taking the endangered whales from the protected waters is if the Japanese are killed. The best thing that can happen is if some commander high up in the military decides to silently take his team of men to completely annihilate the Japanese. We are dealing with complete barbarians; they are not going to listen to any words; the only language they know is killing, and that is why they need to be killed. There are too damn many people on the planet anyway, and that is one of the reasons this atrocity against Nature is happening in the first place. The same goes for the Japanese dolphin hunters; they should be killed in the same way that they kill the dolphins, by cutting their throats and letting them bleed and suffocate to death. Humans are the filth of the planet. This world would be better off if all the humans died and left everything else be. I'm waiting for the aliens to come and kill all the humans... :)

absolutely. How do we get this going? It sickens me that they hunt whales, and for what? I saw a blue whale off the shore of San Diego, California. Absolutely beautiful. Why do we need to hunt them? Answer is; we don't need to hunt them. I'll boycott japanese goods, anyday.

I love whales, but boycotting Japanese products is not a viable solution when so their products are so ingrained in American lives.

But what really should be happening is the American government putting pressure on Japanese government.

Sadly with the Bush government not even having the moral courage to stand up for the world agreement in reducing the greenhouse gas, I doubt too many government will take American government's love of whales very seriously.

yes, whaling is an unnecessary evil! The Japanese must be made to understand it is totally unacceptable at this time by other nations! They should cease and desist!

Excellent question, excellent point and my answer is a definite yes. What are the Japanese thinking--they are overfishing several species of fish and driving them to extinction. They should be stopped; and, hurting Japan economically is definitely the way to go.

No.
They hunt whales. Americans hunt deer. One country is not more righteous than another. I like whales. But even American Eskimos who still subsistance hunt, hunt whales.

I think that, as long as they are not hunted into extinction, we'll all be ok.

How about boycotting USA products until they stop hunting humans in the middle east or any country on the naughty list?

No.
We all pick our battles but I think that our armed forces in Iraq deserve my attention right now.
No disrespect to whales but I've got bigger fish to fry.
