THe question is wrong. You were doing well until the end, and then you lost me. How did you come up with 18=x? The correct ending should be
-2=-9-1x
+9 +9
7= -1x

To get rid of the (-) you must multiply both sides by (-1). In short, change all of the signs.
Then you are left with
x= -7.

There ya go!

You do all of the other ones (1-4) the exact same way.

Numbers 5-12 are a little bit more tricky. All you have to do is distribute out the parenthesis. Then you should be able to solve them the same way as you do 1-4.

Here's an example.

7. 3y+5+2y=5(2y+1)

Start by distributing.
5(2y) + 5(1)
10y + 5
3y+5+2y = 10y+5

Then combine like terms. DO NOT combine the different sides yet.
3y+5+2y = 10y+5
(3y+2y)+5 = 10y +5
5y+5= 10y+5

Then transfer like terms to different sides of the equal sign.
5y+5= 10y+5
- 5 -5
5y =10y-0
-10y -10y
-5y=0

Now, make your variable have an leading coefficient of one.
-5y=0
/-5 /-5 (/= divide)
y= 0

Since the number was 0, obviously anything divided by zero is zero. So, oddly enough, your answer is 0.

The others are just as simple. Just follow those simple steps.

Good luck!

Hello Mary
The first one is wrong. Once you get an answer you always go back and plug in the answer for the x and if it solves then it is the correct answer If it doesn't then it is wrong.

-3x-2=-9-4x
-3x + 4x = -9+2 Now you solve
4x-3x =-9+2
x=-7

try and plug it in and you will see it is the correct answer

Other problems

So your first step is to pass all unknown values in one side and the rest of the numbers in the other so you can solve for x.
The negative sign will be positive when you do this and vice versa the positive will become negative. That s very important otherwise the end result will be wrong.
-7x+5 =8x-1
-7x-8x=-1-5
-15x=-6
x=-6/15 here you can reduce it
to x=-2/5 Try solving it now. It should be correct

Next one

3x=18-3x
3x+3x=18
6x=18
x=18/6
x=3

Solve it by making x a 3
3(3)=18-3(3)
9=18-9
9=9
CORRECT

You can solve number 3 and 4 yourself now.
I will show you number 5 question since it is a little different

2(x-1)=3x+4
get everything out of the parenthesis first
2x-2=3x+4 Then solve like the other problems
2x-3x=4+2
-x=6 you can write this x=-6 since you can't say -x=6

You can do problem 6 yourself I believe
Problem number 7
3y+5+2y=5(2y+1)
you solve each side first
5y+5=10y+5 then you do the same thing as in the first problem
5y-10y=5-5
-5y=0
y=0 in this case 0 over any number negative or positive is 0
Number 8 When you get everything out of parenthesis keep in mind - multiply - becomes +
so
2-4h+16=20h-30 NOW SOLVE LIKE THE OTHERS
h , y or any unknown is the same thing as having x.
You can do number 10 yourself
Number 11
8+5m (square) -15m=12-3m+5m(square)
5m(square)-5m(square) --cancels out once you pass them in the same side so we have
-15m+3m=12-8
-12m=4
-m=4/12
m=-1/3

Check the answer replacing m with 1/3

Number 12 problem

-w+10W-12-4w=-3w+30
5w-3w=30+12
2w=42
w=42/2
w=21

HOPE THIS HELPS
ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ANSWERS. DO a lot of practice homework. It is really easy once you get the hang of it. Once you do this homework take a blank sheet of paper without looking at the solution and try solving them again step by step. Show all steps It is easy that way and it helps you out understand what you are doing so that when you take exams you are READY for them!!
GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

No that's not how you do that problem. Your first steps were fine:
Given: -3x-2 = -9-4x

-3x-2 = -9-4x
(-3x-2)+3x=(-9-4x)+3x (I just did it that way to keep the equals sign in there as it may make it easier later.
-----------
-2=-9-x

However, at that point you should ADD not multiply:

-2=-9-x
(-2)+9=(-9-x)+9
-----------
7=-x
(7)/-1=(-x)/-1 Notice I'm putting in parantheses the old stuff and then doing exactly the same thing to both sides of the equation.
-----------
-7=x

Let's try a few more (randomly selected):

4. -5x-9 = 3x+17

Given: -5x-9=3x+17

-5x-9=3x+17
(-5x-9)+5x=(3x+17)+5x
----------
-9=8x+17
(-9)-17=(8x+17)-17
----------
-26=8x
(-26)/8=(8x)/8
----------
-13/4 = x after reducing the fraction

5. 2(x-1) = 3x+4

Given: 2(x-1)=3x+4
You could divide each side by 2 or you could distribute the 2 first, which is what I will do because I don't want to deal with a fraction on the other side

2(x-1)=3x+4
----------
2x-2=3x+4
(2x-2)-2x=(3x+4)-2x
----------
-2=x+4
(-2)-4=(x+4)-4
----------
-6=x

10. 4k-15(k-2) = 17k+9

Given: 4k-15(k-2)=17k+9

4k-15(k-2)=17k+9
----------
4k-15k+30 = 17k+9 (I distributed that 15 first)
----------
-11k+30=17k+9 (Combine like terms)
(-11k+30)+11k-9=(17k+9)+11k-9
----------
21=28k
(21)/28=(28K)/28
k=3/4

Is this all making a bit more sense? If not, please contact me and I will be glad to help more if you're still not getting it. It's not hard once you know what you're doing. Whatever you do, do the exact same thing to whatever is on both sides of the equal sign, or only simplify the stuff on one side of it (like when we combined like terms or distributed).

15. you recognize that 5/8 is larger than a million/2 (4/8 = a million/2) so a million/2 + 5/8 > a million sixteen. 2/6 = a million/3 so this will become 2/3 + a million/3 = a million 17. the two words are extra desirable than a million/2 so 7/9 + 3/5 > a million 18. 6/10 = 12/20 so 12/20 + 5/20 = 17/20 that's under a million 19. the two words are under a million so a million > 3/8 + 4/9 20. locate common denominator: 6/7 * (8/8) = forty 8/fifty six a million/8 * (7/7) = 7/fifty six forty 8/fifty six + 7/fifty six = fifty 5/fifty six < a million

/ = divided by if you didn't know
-3x-2 = -9-4x
+3x +3x
-2= -9-1x
+9 +9
7= -1x
/-1 /-1
-7=x

So, problems 1-4 are pretty much the same as the one above.

2(x-1) = 3x + 4
2x - 2= 3x + 4
-2x -2x
-2= 1x + 4
-4 -4
-6= 1x
/1 /1
-6 = x

That was #5 above, now it's the same as 6-8

hope that helps
