I'm talking strictly legal, I don't care if you look old or are old, are stores supposed to check id no matter your appearance for you to purchase an R rated movie? If so, where would you find the law that requires it(link or web adress if possible)? Thank You!

In Australia if the purchaser is a minor they cannot purchase R or M-MA rated items unless the parent is with them

Its not a fine-print law, its a liability issue. If a movie rental store allows you to check out an R-rated movie, your parents can come and sue the movie rental place. If you had a business, would you want to get sued ??

I live in California. It is legal for stores to ask for an ID. How else would workers know if children are being exposed to movies they shouldn't be seeing.
