If Carle is 3 years younger than Sam, then Sam is three years older than Carle. And David is 4 years older than Carle. So, David is one year older than Sam.

lets say sam is 18. if carle is 3 years younger, that makes him 15. now if david is 4 years older than carle, that makes david 19. therefor david is older than carle by a year.
