We are familiar with the formula for kinetic energy of a moving body as
1/2 m v^2.
In deriving this formula we had in mind that the mass of a moving body is in no way affected by the speed v.
If an object of mass is at rest and if we give an energy = 1/2 mv^2, it will move with a velocity v.
If infinite amount of energy is given, then the velocity will be infinite as per this formula.

But latter, by Einstein and others it was found that the mass of a moving body changes according to its velocity - a new and unbelievable concept but which was verified to be correct.
The mass of a moving object is related to its velocity by the equation
m = mo / √ [1- β^2] where β is the ratio of the speed of the object to the speed of light.

From this we have a relation to the mass and velocity of any object which cannot be detected when the velocity is very small compared to the velocity of light.

When infinite amount of energy is given to an object its mass approaches to infinite value where as its velocity approaches to a finite value C, equal to the velocity of light.
Thus there is a limit of velocity [namely C] beyond which no object can be made to move by giving any amount of energy.

This new concept is involved in a seemingly simple equation E = mC^2.

The energy we do give to an object is used to increase its mass and the formula to be used is E = [m-m0] c^2.
Where m0c^2 is the rest mass energy and mc^2 is the energy when it is moving with a velocity v.

Thus to increase the velocity of an object from rest to a value v we must give it an energy
[m-m0] c^2 and the object will have a velocity v.

The formula 1/2 mv^2 is not valid further. However since at low velocities the increase in mass being negligible we still use the formula for k.e as E = 1/2 mv^2.

Since there is one to one relation between mass and energy it is a new concept and has changed our understanding about nature and has opened a new epoch in Science.

The equation is used to calculate the speed of light, since it is such a large number, E represents the units of energy which you are trying to calculate, you get this (e=...) by filling in the blanks of M, C(2), M represents the value of your mass and C2 represents the velocity of light squared.

once you figure out the value after doing the operations on the right side of the equation, you will know what e, the units of energy are. This is what I can gather from the net, I hope it's right. Goodluck

Basically it means that the relatively of gravity is a constant. That an apple that falls from a tree will fall at the same rate as a feather falling at the same rate. It has to do with specific gravity. All things fall at the same rate regarding their specific gravity.

Specific gravity is the equal of their weigh of a drop of water in the same volume. If an item is equal to the weight of the volume of its weight of a drop of water, then it will fall at the same rate.

An apple will fall faster than a feather, yet per volume, each will fall at the same rate due to their specific gravity. This is proven by gemstones that are more dense than others. Liquids known as specific gravity in nature proves that a sapphire in a specific gravity of 3.5 will be not only colorless, but will neither sink nor float. It then becomes colorless in the appropriate dense liquid.

E is the energy released, m is the mass of the substance disappeared, c is the speed of light.
It gives a relation between the mass disappeared and the energy released. So it is also called mass-energy relation...:)
