My family is up and flown....but secretly I spend more on one son who doesn't call with his family...hoping one day he'll be on my doorstep. He lives nearby.

When they were growing up, I tried to get somewhat close. Now they are grown and have different ideas about Christmas, and I don't even try any more. They get what they want, or need, or what I decide to give them. Some years I will spend more on one, next year on the other. It balances out. The oldest daughter got a laptop computer for her birthday/Christmas, we told her it is socks for her for the next 5 years!
Now it's the grandkids, they get approximately the same amount. The 2 boys get checks for the same amount each, they need money more than presents; the girl gets a present.

Absolutely, I spend the same amount on each. If one is getting more than the other because s/he is younger and the gifts are less expense I always explain that to the other one. And YES, I think kids can tell if one is getting more than the other, that has been y experience, even with kids in my classroom! lol!

Years ago, when the kids were small, I used to keep a running total of how much I had spent on all three. I would think, Steve will love that then find the two girls were lagging behind. So, I would get something for the two girls and find that Steve was lagging behind by £5. So, I would buy something for the girls to catch up. Probably £9.99 then have to get something for Steve for £5. SAD, I know because at a young age they haven't got a clue about money but, it made me feel better.

We give them cash.
Our kids get more, grand kids get less money.
Our family totals 40 people.
Too many to buy gifts and wrap for.
It makes me tired just thinking about all the work, It use to be.
Every one loves money.
We just have a fun/spiritual party, with lots of good food and goodies.
Play and sing Christmas music and enjoy the festivities.
They all have fun shopping after Christmas for the sales.
Money works.

I never have and never will show favoritism with either one of my kids. I spend the same on them and they also got the same amount of gifts as well.
When they were young, if someone gave something to one of them, they better have something for the other one as well, didn't matter what, just something.

I take into account the financial situation of the parents when choosing gifts or giving money.
I also try to give presents at different times so that close comparisons are unlikely.

They all get the same within a few dollars. I also do this with the grandchildren. I bought my grandaughter one present and my grandson 3 but they amount to the same amount of money within $3.00 and they will not be together when they open them.

We had to do it with the boys, and now we try to do it with the grands. Sometimes I may go a little over here or there, but not by much and not enough to worry about. But it really is work trying to keep it as close as possible, for sure!

It is not about the money but rather what I thought each one would want. And some of the games and toys are for a few to share.
