Whatever one you choose, you'll need to book asap. New Year's is a very busy time in Sydney, especially as many other people have the same plans as you to stay in Sydney over the New Year's. You're looking at only a 20 or 30 minute walk from the main hostels in the CBD (Maze, WakeUp!, Sydney Central, YHA (Central) to Circular Quay (which is on the way to the Opera House). On New Years', I'd recommend catching a train if you must or walking to get to anywhere in town, buses or taxis will just take way too long. The hostels mentioned are probably the most popular and closest to the Opera House, although you won't be able to see the Opera House from the hostel. There's also places like the Glenferrie Lodge in Kirrabilli, a short ferry ride away.

Good luck.

Accommodation near the Opera House is international hotels and expensive. The hostels and cheap hotels are near Central Station. You can walk or take a train from central to Circular Quay. If you are going to watch the fireworks from the Opera House, get there very early to get a position. Take your breakfast, lunch and dinner with you, you will be there a long time.

In Sydney you are able to benefit from the organic beauty. From unspoilt beaches to community gardens and, needless to say, the sparkling harbour, Sydney is just a city worth visited and with hotelbye you could have the opportunity to do that. The Sydney Harbour Bridge or "Coathanger," whilst the locals call it's one of many places you should not miss in your trip here. That place was the city's best-known landmark prior to construction of the Opera House. Supported by massive dual piers at each conclusion, it had been built-in 1932 and stays the world's greatest metal posture link, connecting the harbour's north and south shores in a single curve rising 134 metros above the water. Along its size work two railway lines and seven counters for road traffic, the way of which can be different in accordance with traffic flow. Also, to master concerning the interesting history of the bridge's construction you are able to look at the memorial in the south-eastern pier.
